Telekinesis Power

Post by Sunslinger »

I wonder how to distinguish the Telekinesis Power from the Immobilize, Push and Fly Powers when dealing with other persons.

With telekinesis, as far as I see it, you could do about everything that you could do with the above mentioned powers. He could throw people around, lift them so they cannot move or move them around, so they can, in fact, fly. That's too much in my opinion.

Would it be an option to limit Telekinesis to dead things? Then other characters/persons could not be affectes.

Another option I thought about is, that a character with telekinesis could only use it to wrestle with other characters using the telekinesis stats instead of Agility and Brawn. Then he could use wrestling maneuvers but could not just lift people or let them fly around.

I also asked myself if a character himself could fly using telekinesis?

You could certainly can mimic all those things but a quick reread of the power itself tells us that you wouldn't be very good at any of them, certainly not as good as you would be if you actually purchased the powers themselves.

Your telekinesis is treated as your brawn score for picking things up so unless you have 2 levels of it you wouldn't be able to fly or pick up another person since your weight limit is about 50 pounds if you had three you could lift two people maybe three if they are small. Once you picked them up you would only move them 2x your mind so up to 10 squares a panel, which absolutely pales in comparison to the 5x flight for actual flight.

yes you can immobilize a target but it takes a constant contested effort to do so with your TK versus their brawn, as apposed to them having to make a contest against 10x your immobilize to break free and it taking their panel to do that succeed or fail.

Again you can use it to push somebody but you aren't going to get double the damage for knockback like you would for push.

So unless you power stunt at the cost of taking versatile which allows you to do a power stunt once per issue for free or spending a hero die to do it, it's really not such a bargain. It certainly makes a good excuse to justify having those other powers though, perhaps even is some sort of multi-power but even that in many cases would be less than ideal.

Let's face it, many comic characters do all of those things with their telekinesis, but they are rarely as good at it as someone with a more traditional version of say, immobilize. When Mr. Freeze freezes someone, they're stuck there until they somehow unfreeze. As Bearded Dork points out, someone using telekinesis has to spend a lot of effort to maintain the power.

That said, you could use the Only affects X limitation, with X being non-living material, to mitigate any abuse you're seeing.

Coming back to that topic after some time :)

You picked up Immobilization from the things I mentioned. As stated above with Brawn 2 you can lift a person. So - well - you could lift him one foot (or just one inch) off the ground. After you did that the target would not be able to move whatever he does if he hasn't got a power like fly to try it. And telekinesis is maintained so unless the Telekinetic gets damage, the targed dies from thirst. A sure kill against any close combatant.

So one of my points is: would you have to win a wrestling contest using your Telekinesis "stats" before lifting somebody off the ground?

Btw: I'd say you needed Area effect of some kind to pick more than one person/thing up with the power.

Yes.

Yes you would. And you'd have to take the "Area" enhancement first before you put points in Area (so being able to TK a Small Burst would cost 2 extra points). To run something like that, you would roll ONE grab check, and each target rolls to get out. If you crush them, you would make one roll that each roll to resist separately.
