Other Hero Die Uses?

Post by AslanC »

In my game I allow the players to spend a Hero Die to take an immediate action (when dramatically appropriate of course) with a -1 Multiplier Penalty on all aspects of the action (hit + damage, etc...)

What other "extra" or not "Rules As Written" Hero Die effects do you allow?

I allow my players to introduce an environmental detail that might not otherwise exist that allows them to do something they normaly couldn't otherwise do or has a significant game impact.

For instance the characters are fighting atop a building and one needs to make a quick escape over the edge without hurting himself. The character spends a Hero Die and states that he jumps off the roof into the trash bin full of foam stuffing that is in the alley below.

That mechanic is very like Inspiration from WW's Adventure I've considered doing that as well, but my group is mostly just getting their feet wet in the game.

Yah, I've only used it for online gaming but I like the way some players really start to question and work with their surroundings to overcome a challenge when the rule is in place.

I've also allowed players to insert useful background fluff into a game using this method. This can result in a permanent contact (hey my brother-in-law is a cop, let's go ask him) or more firmly establish a character's role in the story/setting (I was once part of that evil organization...before it became evil of course).
