A Familiar Adventure Chp 1: Even Humans Get Ticks

Redtooth's blade nips you nose, drawing blood but you suppress the urge to yelp in pain. (1pt dmg!) A toothy grin crosses the armored wolf's face as he pants with excitement.

You ignore the indignation of your opponent drawing first blood and swing at the wolf as he struggles with the bound rabbit. Your glaive cuts the beast from neck to navel and he falls to the ground in a pile of red and gore. The rabbit continues to swing helplessly from the rope and you can see he/she is unconscious.

The wolf that you had landed on earlier takes the opportunity to dart off into the trees, Redtooth cursing his lineage loudly. After he exhausts his supply of insults, he turns his attention back to you, blade in hand.

"Dog, what is this rabbit to you, hmmm? Is he worth your life? I'll give you the one chance to leave my master's territory with your hide intact."

Kerbi's mouth stretches into a mirthless grin as he flicks the dead wolf's blood off the glaive's blade.

"You would be better to ask if the rabbit is worth yours, you sniveling cur," he taunts the wolf, as he sinks into a combat stance.

"It just so happens I came here looking for this place's master. I believe he may have taken something that is precious to me," he adds, his eyes narrowing. "Perhaps if you're nice enough to tell me about him, I'll let you leave this place on your own feet."

"Cur," he snarls back. "I'm not the pup with the bloodied snout. Maybe I'll take your head back to Master Redcoin when I'm done with ya, as a favor to you see?"

His wolfish chuckle at his own humor quickly turns to a growl as he swipes at your head once again...

The blade strikes and slides off Kerbi's shoulder as it fails to bite in.

Kerbi's tongue wags as his open-mouthed grin widens. "You hit like a newborn kitten, you son of a..."

He swings his glaive unexpectedly trying to catch the wolf off-guard.

As fast as a striking viper, the wolf snaps to the side, evading your glaive's deadly path. He responds with a swipe of his curved sword aimed at your fur-covered belly...

Redtooth's sword draws another slight cut along Kerbi's skin.

Unfazed, the canine familiar returns in kind, sweeping his polearm with a flourish to bring it down on Redtooth's head.

While trying to keep a brave face, Kerbi frets inwardly.

This is taking too long. The longer he tarries here dancing with this wolf, the bigger chance the one that got away brings more of his kin to join in the fight. Not to mention that his mistress's life is still in the balance and he hasn't gotten any closer to finding a solution.

In growing desperation, Kerbi tries to be clever. Swinging his glaive low, he uses the blade to scoop up a clump of dirt and leaves, then flings it at the wolf's face, hoping to disorient his opponent and gain a much needed edge.

[You tell me what to roll. I'm trying to avoid having the fight devolve to just "I miss, you hit, I miss." I stopped playing D&D partially because of that.

[I agree, that's why I had the other wolf take off, trying to speed things up a bit. As to the roll, I'd say a Called Shot fits the situation (p21); you'll need to hit by +10 over his dodge roll using your normal attack roll. Don't forget your Hero Points and your Hero Die. If Kerbi fails to blind Redtooth, I'm going to move past the encounter in short order...]

[Ugh. Considering my luck in just trying to hit him, never mind getting a +10, I might as well not bother.

And I don't see how Hero Dice or Points could help. Even if I converted the die into Points, that still only gets me a max of 9 points to add to a roll, if I understand the rules correctly.

Who knows? Maybe I'll get three doubles in a row or something...]
