Multipower and concentration

Post by dStones »

Hi everyone,
I read a lot of posts about concentration and MP and summoning and I think I got stuck in confusion...

1) So, a concentration power need you to "concentrate" to TURN ON the power (at least, this is what I understood from a post from BASHMAN in another topic).
So if I create a Force Field (with concentration) or summoning, I go last on that page and need concentration to create it, but then on next page I can act normally (and the field won't crumble until someone destroys it and the creature summoned won't disappear until I dismiss it or someone kills it)
Is that correct ?

2) Is there a way to summon more than 6 creatures ?

3) If I have a Multipower with
a) Force Field
b) Summoning
c) Special Attack

If I use Force Field and then Special Attack, will the force field crumble instantly ?
Same thing if I use special attack (so the creature will disappear) ?

Thanks to everybody

1. Yes, I think that is right. It is setting up the Force Field that takes concentration. The reason for this rule was game balance. Otherwise, someone could just put up a force field everytime it was there turn. This way there is a vulnerable gap between a force field falling and it being re-built.

2. By RAW, no, but you probably could make a COSMIC ranks of Summoning allow more creatures (and increase the total Hits Pool they share) as well as increasing how much powers and stats they can have.
Actually when Awesome Powers comes out that focuses on Summoning and similar powers, there will be a number of Enhancements that help deal with these issues without going Cosmic. For now I'd say (and this is off the cuff) that a variant of the Extra Effect Enhancement could be used to summon 2 additional Creatures and add 20 to the HITS pool that they share, assuming the Narrator approves it.

3. Yes. Don't put Force Field in your Multi-Power unless you want to use it instead of the other things. Of course, you cannot really use Special Attack through a force field anyway (you shoot your own force field).

Thank you BASHMAN!

About point 3, I agree it was not the best example I can think of :)
But my concern was about summoning.
I kinda struggle with the "duration" aspect...
I mean :
Special attack is "istant" : is simple , when you use it, you use it, when your panel is out, is out.
Mantainance like "flight" is ok too : when you use it, you use it, when the panel is out, is still active. If you have it in a multipower and you switch, you start to fall.
But powers like X Mastery, Summoning or Force field is kinda blurry.
For example i have Earth Mastery and I use it to shake the ground. This is simple : you switch your slot and earth stop shaking.
But if you have Weather Mastery the "call rain" effect vanishes as well ?
If you have a "psionic force field" (so you must keep concentrate through), if you switch it crumbles, but if you create some icy-barrier like iceman ? Would it crumble ?
If you have "Summon demons" well, if you switch the demon is banished in his plane... but if you have "Summon Minions" ? Why they'd run away ?

Yeah, I know : the answer is "then don't put it in a multipower!" :D
And you're right!
I am just curious to understand the "duration" concept.

DStones; from a game-design point of view, it is a matter of balance. If you were allowed to keep all your summoned creatures AND blast away, AND make Force Fields, AND Fly all at once with your multi-power, why take any of the powers separately?

The point of the multi-power is to give you a cost break on things that you are only going to sequentially rather than simultaneously.

For things that you want to (always) use simultaneously, you might look at LINKED as an Enhancement.

The Same Source Limitation also can work to represent powers that share a common source but can be used at the same time (though if that source is taken away, all the powers with that source are lost).

You might also be interested in the new concept from Awesome Powers 6, which is the Gadget Bundle where an item can have multiple different powers, and you do get a bit of a cost break on it.

What if the special attack was actually part of the force field being projected out to strike an opponent? Kind of like things I've seen Invisible Woman do (she's been able to do ranged attacks while keeping up her FF on more than one occasion)

Then her Special Attack has the [BYPASS] Enhancement on it to work through her Force Fields.
