Question: Ice Walls and Sustained?

Post by Dragonfly »

Another question:

I'm trying to build a character who creates stone walls that remain if he loses concentration or gets knocked out. Is this the correct build for that?

Stone Walls: Force Field 3 (150 Hits, 10 Soak, Mid Range, Medium Burst, Enhancement: Sustained, Enhancement: Variable), 9 Pts.

Thanks in advance!

Best,

First, a Force Field is a Concentration power. Officially there is no way to "buy off" the Concentration limitation that I know of.

There is a Power Enhancement, Second Nature (p39) that lets you change a Maintained power to a Sustained power. If you wanted to house rule it, you could cimply say that changing the Concentration limitation to Sustained would cost 2 (or more) points.

Concentration-Maintained-Sustained

Finally, even if you allow Force Field to be purchased with the Sustained quality, a power that can be turned off will turn off when the hero becomes unconscious. To me, that implies the Force Field would still be shut down (ie the rock wall crumbles to dust).

Maybe one way to achieve what you're after is to find a way to use X-Mastery to create the wall since X-Mastery actually moves things around physically, not creating them out of thin air. A rock wall created with X-Mastery will always remain a rock wall I believe.

You'd either have to use a power trick (it's an option in a BAM article) or link X-Mastery with FF to give the rock wall stats I think.

Or...

Just discuss it with the narrator and decide that it remains behind (just using FF). Maybe with the limitation that it requires existing stone to create the stone wall?

Next Printing has updated the entry for "Second Nature" enhancement saying it can be used to buy off a built-in limitation for a power.
