I've recently instituted a ruling stating that the Variable enhancement can only be used for one specific type of damage, after the first, when used in conjunction with Special Attack. For example, stealing Chris' example in UE, a character that wants to be able to throw fire ,ice or acid boomerangs would do this:
Boomerangs: Special Attack 5(Variable(Ice Fire Acid)) Cost: 7
If the player wants to be able to adjust damage/to-hit/range/etc on the fly, another Variable point would be required.
My players tend to get too creative to leave things like this open-ended. It starts off as a standard laser rifle and by the end of the issue ends up being an Anti-Matter-Spewing-Hydra-Headed-Gauss-Cannon-Of-Death.
I do institute the same ruling on my villains though I know I won't push the enhancement to the limit. I have to say though, that this enhancement is really wonderful and is the perfect example of what makes Bash such a dynamic game.
