Site Upgrade

Post by OmniMan »

All,

The site has been under attack for some time and I am currently working on updates that will help prevent this. There may be some downtime and this post will be my test to see if anything is lost during the upgrade. If you're reading this on 10/19 then all went well.

The upgrade is complete and no content was lost, however...

I believe it's time to move this site to a new platform. I'm currently experimenting with different forum software or the Joomla CMS system, which would give us far more features. One would be an integrated wiki for easy access to character builds, house rules, errata and clarification and so on.

Another reason is the lack of security on this site. Currently registration requires approval but doesn't have a captcha or any other way to stop bots from registering (though they aren't gaining access). This version of phpBB doesn't support that feature. I can attempt to update the forum even more but I think at this point a full site upgrade is in order.

Frankly the site traffic has dropped off considerably and while part of that may be the game's age, I believe another part is that the site itself is showing its age. One major change I see coming is the theme that hasn't been changed in the nearly 10 years we have been here. It says a lot that we still have an active community since bashtalk.org was launched in 2010 and while traffic has slowed, this site isn't going anywhere. I love BASH and though I'm not the most active here I do still pop in to check and see what builds people have made, what rule questions have come up, etc.

I'll do my best to make sure whatever happens next is a positive change and welcome feedback or suggestions from all of you.

Here's looking to the future.

All -

As explained above, the site is due for an upgrade. I'm currently working on that. There may be some interruption while work is being done.

I'll keep you all posted.
