Stacking Bonuses

Post by drkrash »

How do you order bonuses that have limits?

Example: Agility 3, Boost 2 for something defensive, Danger Sense.

Is this x7 defense? Or does the Danger Sense apply first, raising it to x5, and thus effectively negating the Boost (which caps at 5)?

Deflect could also be used instead of Danger Sense here.

Oh, an additional random question 'cuz I'm already here.

Can anyone take a stab at re-explaining Push to me? I have seen so many examples of Push, and I so rarely arrive at the "damage" (for KB) that the characters' creators do. It's calculated like Special Attack and doubled, but when does that doubling occur?

Example: Mind 3, Push 3. Is this (3+3)*2= x12? Or 3 + (3*2) = x9?

Similarly, Push seems to be able to go over x10 very easily. Do you use the rule for multipliers beyond x10, or do you just multiply as usual?

Putting some builds together for my book and came across these issues.

Note that Knock-Back is treated as Falling damage, and falling damage specifically caps at x10.

It is (3+3)2 = x12. However, that is to determine how many FEET they are knocked back. So an average roll would be 7+2 = 9x10 = 90 (see rules for rolls above x10). 90' of Knockback - 10' per point of Brawn the target has. Let's say it is a 2. so 70' knocked back is equivilent to a 70' fall = x7 Dmg. That's rather significant.

Cool. That takes care of Push, though I still think it is figured wrong on a lot of characters I've seen.

How about the defense stacking, which was my primary question? :)

Lemme see. Looking at the NEW printing:
Defensive Styles: Tae Kwon Do, Karate: You can avoid a blow. Your Defense is 2 higher (to a max of x5) for defending against hand-to-hand attacks (fists, swords, etc).
So there it is spelled out as a max x5 Defense. That was a fix because it was ambiguous in prior printing.

Sorry, sir. I must press the point. I assumed that was the case with Defensive Martial Arts. My question was also with Boost + Danger Sense or Deflect.

I have Agility 3 and Deflect 2 AND a defensive Boost bonus of 2, does the Boost still work?

And just to clarify on the Defensive Martial Arts, if I have Agility 3 and Defensive Martial Arts and Deflect 2, the Deflect is redundent in HTH combat, right?

things which are limited to 5 are limited to 5, but things that are not limited to 5 can stack on top of that

so stat + boost cannot exceed 5. But you can add armor to that to get up to 8 (since armor is limited to +3).

Okey-dokey. So to confirm my utter obtuseness in this regard (I assure you: I am otherwise a pretty bright guy! :P ), the Agility+Boost+Deflect would be a full x7 defense in my example.

Good to know. True to good design principle, I think, higher defense and soak is easier to come by than attack and damage.
