Wording of "Body Slam". Alternatives?

Post by BASHMAN »

Something that I think I want to do in the next printing of BASH! UE is change the word "Body Slam" to something else. Several wrestling buffs have pointed out to me that a "Body Slam" is not, in fact, the move I was describing in the book- but instead, one where you throw a grabbed opponent to the ground (with yourself on top of them).

The move I'm envisioning is where you run at someone as fast as you can and ram into them. I'm seeking some alternative names to "Body Slam" for this move. So far I'm thinking:

Slam. This would be the simplest change to make that I can think of.

Ram. This is more precise in describing it, but since vehicles have their own seperate "Ramming" rules, I don't know if I want to use the same phrase (it may be confusing).

Charge: This sounds really good- but unfortunately, I don't think it will work. People using weapons can also use momentum to make what would be described as a "Charge" attack. So I don't want Charge to be synonymous with an unarmed ramming attack.

But I'm open to your suggestions.

Also, I think I will mention you can attempt a grab as part of a "slam", which allows you to "tackle" an opponent.

The move is called a "Shoulder Block" a "Flying Block" or a "Cross Body Block" in wrestling, if that helps at all.

I've seen/used the term "Body check" from hockey to describe that maneuver, with "Tackle" being the term if you pull down the guy to the ground.

Yep. Body check is where my mind was heading as well.

I think the more damaging version titled "Spear" (or Gore, if your a fan of the wrestler Rhino) seems more appropriate.

The problem with "Spear" is it implies hitting someone with your head, (it's a football term) and I could easily see someone using their feet, elbow, shoulder, etc to do this move.

Not in wrestling it doesn't. The wiki Aslan linked to describes it perfectly. They never use their head when I've seen the move done (and I've seen it done many times over the years, both live and on tv)

I agree that the term Body Slam confused me as well but admittedly that's not saying much. Slam is pretty much the same thing in my vocabulary as Body Slam. My vote would be for either Charge or Ram. It could be destinguished as an Armed or Unarmed Charging attack. Ram to me sounds more BASH though so I am undecided about the two. Block, spear, check, tackle, gore, etc just don't describe the attack imo.
