Narrator Aid of Iconic Marvel & DC stats

Post by kevperrine »

Hello BASH! UE fans!

When I love a game, I toy around with things that might help my game-gang enjoy the game even more. So now and then I come up with player and Narrator aids.

This is the first that I've created for BASH! UE.
a Heroic Narrator Aid of Iconic Marvel & DC stats for BASH! UE

Please take a look, offer suggestions - on anything from the content to design or ease of use, etc... I'm always looking to improve my ideas.

In the meantime - THIS little document is inspired by the classic game - Marvel Super Heroes RPG by TSR. The Campaign Guide to be exact. As a kid I loved looking at the descriptions of base character statistics and not only reading but seeing my favorite character beside the stat. It really made me remember the power of each rank.

I've done the same here - with both Marvel and DC, several of the most iconic characters from those comic book universes as well as a few of my favs tossed in!

This may help you and your game groups to understand the BASH! UE game a little better and at the same time give you a reference on where YOUR own original hero or villain might rank comparatively.

I hope you enjoy it. I have several other ideas that will be coming... For now - BASH IT UP!!

enjoy,
kevin perrine

I'd put Flash and Kid Flash in the Agility 5 section. In DC they are the embodiment of speed. Compare with the Speedster example given in the book. I would also bump Superboy into World Class, since he has all the same powers as Superman and Supergirl, plus limited telekinesis. I'm a DC guy, so can't give you much help with the Marvel side of things. Besides those little nitpicks, I can't find much to suggest. Awesome work!

Awesome work man! LOVE the layout and graphic work on it. And I dig the the Faserip to BASH conversions. Oh and just saw that you have M&M 2e listed.

Btw, great job listing all the different Marvel and DC heroes. That really helps to have bench marks. Interesting that a vast majority of Marvel and DC heroes fall into Street Level. Not disagreeing, just interesting. I see their pt totals beside them...where did they come from?

Btw, very minor, but I would put Spider-Man's Agility at a 4. He's really hard to hit in the comics. But if he does get hit, it hurts.

Addendum: Looking over the printed document, it looks even better. It looks professionally done!

Thanks for sharing this!!

Awesome job! Seeing the Marvel/DC characters layed out really helps give a total picture of benchmark in creating my own characters.

Top notch work - thanks for sharing

Yes. I knew there would be conjecture on some of the stat placements. And strangely enough, I am a "Marvel guy" so your thoughts are appreciated (I'd like to better fill in the "holes" I had at the top in 5 & Cosmic for DC better)...

BUT - as I noted on the front page of that doc, everyone's going to have their different opinions. And honestly... you may be right. But I assure you that I went through a pretty good process with some pretty legit, let's say, "authoritative" aid when picking character's stats.

Another good example that I could also note (if there were space) is that characters might be different in different sitatuations or with specific powers in play, such as:
Beast Boy: stats can be very very different give his forms
Captain America: likely has a form of Boost or the new Heighten power that would UP his stats.
Reed Richards: I really liked the build I saw someone do with his Mind at a more normal 2, with a Boost or Heighten to raise it to 5 for all things Scientific/Techie.

That said - my placements are where they are, use them as guidelines, NOT hardline rule. This is in no way "official" for either comic universe or the BASH! UE game. It's just my guidelines that I wanted to share for fans.
Plus...
The neat thing of comics, stats *can* fluctuate based on the writer and story needs. So, one could believe that any character's stat could possibly swing depending... and STILL be in character.

Yes. My two (other super) systems of choice are FASERIP and M&M. I grew up with FASERIP as my very first RPG product and M&M is my more recent love. BASH! has now solidly taken over since M&M's weird swing all the way from M&M1 to 3rd edition...

The overall point values come from actual stat sheets that I have. The ones I have listed I have on character sheets that I will share with everyone via the Wiki I'm working on. They're NOT mine, they're from two of my friends (who won't likely post them for themselves). But trust me when I say they're both very very good at working up stats for BASH! and these super conversions.

The ONLY reason I did a chart on the point value is to give an idea of what sort of Character Points COULD be used to make some of our favorite characters. So a Narrator could easily go the route of saying "the Campaign Level is xx" based on wanting to do a "Daredevil" style campaign or whatever.
You could easily look at the lowest Avenger total I have listed (surprisingly - She Hulk: 22pts.) to the highest (no surprise - Thor: 36pts) and ask the player group to:

Build your heroes between 22-36 Character Points. Then give them all Hero Dice or Setback points (YES for going over Thor's build!) to set the differences. THAT is my favorite thing about BASH! so far!! The neat balancing point!

There is no reason though why every build from different people or even from me on different days, MIGHT be different point values based on the style and thought process of the build.

One thing I want to do (once I'm more comfy with my ability to build BASH! characters) is to build a "level" of characters like Spiderman and Superman at the different Campaign levels in the book (Mystery Men, Street Level, etc..) to show different points in their careers. More as an exercise than anything. Show what the difference are.

On that note. But a different topic. I was looking at characters stats I have there. Noticing that Spiderman is BETTER than Captain America (or equal) in every stat. But I'd give Spidey only a 30% chance of WINNING in a hero-on-hero fight with Cap.
I'm interested in seeing the builds and how/why that fight *should* work out to a Cap win on the average, even with Spidey built with more points and higher stats on average...

I wonder if it really WOULD be the Hero Dice extra Cap would have? It's a curiosity to me.

Hey THANKS! again.
I love the accolades, but I'd also like to see any suggestions on the style/layout if anyone has them. Or technical corrections.

I won't care about changing stat placements. Your Flash may be higher than my vision... That's okay and not something I'll change. But if I mispelled a name or something - or if anyone has an idea for a better layout or easier to read thing...

I want to know.

Thanks again!

Cap would win not because of stats but because of power choices.

1st: The Shield. It gives him Deflect & Special Attack (Probably Variable). So if spidy hits him with web-balls he can knock them back at him. Deflect would make his defense CRAZY high- and Spidy would have a really hard time hitting it. Now Spidey is also really hard to hit- but Cap could pump enough points of Special Attack into hitting that he can hit Spidey.

2nd: Martial Arts Mastery. These abilities are DANG useful in a fistfight. He can block punches and counter-attack. You grab him w/ your super-strength? he uses it against you with a Judo Flip. You knock him on the ground- he's back on his feet before you can take advantage of it.

3rd: Hero Points. Cap would be able to make more use of Hero Points because he's likely a less expensive build. In addition, He probably has Attack Weak Point, which would let him REALLY end the fight with a good hit that gets through. Now if it is more than a 1-on-1 fight, he should also have Leadership to bring into it.

What I think is we should stage THIS fight in the Super Brawl! section!
