Campaign Info: Year of the Chimera

Post by Dustland »

Who?: A small group of everyday citizens who have been cast into the role of something greater than man was ever intended to be.

What?: The Event linked random people to an idea or archetype that they reflected at the moment of The Event, granting them superhuman powers and turning their world upside down.

Where?: Horizon City (Horizon City if a fictitious Southwestern US city that clings to life in the desert, surrounded by arid mountains and vast deserts. It was once a thriving mining, educational, and gambling center, but is quickly fading away with the economy.)

When?: One month following The Event, fall of 2010.

Why?: That is the BIG question!

Nova.net: A forum devoted to those touched by The Event. Nova.net is a gathering place for thousands of people from across the globe to come together anonymously to discuss what happened and what will happen next.

The characters found one another on the site; though they may not be from Horizon City, they are drawn there by an invitation from "Mama B", one of Nova.net's few voices of reason and calm. Where many of the posters either scream for an eradication of the "Nova menace" or openly plot their bid to rule the world, Moma B has saught out the few people who hope to use their gifts for the betterment of mankind, or at the very least, don't appear to be complete psychopaths.

Why she chose you few, you don't know, but your heart tells you the trip to her small, well lived in craftsman style home will give you a sense of stability and friendship that has vanished in the chaos of the last month.

Character Creation:

1) Describe the character's link to The Event in one or two words (ie Fire, Anger, Doctor, etc)

2) Come up with a brief background of what the character did prior to The Event, and was doing at the time of The Event that linked them to their archetype.

3) 25 pt build; max 3 in stats (B,A,M) unless their archetype is reasonably linked to the stat (ie Strongman could have a higher Brawn, but not Mind or Agility). All powers should be a reflection of their Archetype. Be creative!

4) Briefly how does the character feel about their becoming a "Nova" and what are they hoping to find/hear/become when they meet with Mama B? Keep in mind the world is in a state of chaos as governments and people try to come to terms with the sudden appearance of Novas, many of whom have already begun to spread death and destruction in their wake.

Do you mean the character powers comes from his 'frame of mind ' and/or situation during the event?

Edit: Ok forget my question. I read your first post about the game and understood what you meant^^

Very first naive builds
Dp7 build

Well, Overdrive is a character that I was supposed to play on a forum with some friends. But the game quickly got out of breath.
I'm still attached to that character but I wonder if he suits your style of game.
Playing an happy go lucky Brick/Scrapper could be a 'too easy' choice?

Of course i'd make a new build for him.
I can also keep the encounter in his first background for the context linked to 'the event'.
Too cheesy/cliché?

I really want to play in this!

Quick question, are any of the alternate rules being used? (I.E. buying advantages/disadvantages, .5 stats, etc.)

I know there's info posted on two threads; if anyone needs clarification or examples, let me know!

Also I'd prefer you don't post your character here; just send me a message with either a link or the build in the message. I want the characters getting to know one another to be a part of the game.

Volsung: What is Overdrive's defining idea/archetype? Daredevil or thrillseeker seems to be a good fit. I like the character you have going, I'd like to know what he was doing at the time of The Event that linked him to whatever his archetype is.

(On a side note, Triple Crown is a rough blue collar bar in my town!)

Boost: Glad you're interested! No alternate rules. If you have some compelling reason for needing to buy the adv/disadv, let me know, otherwise I'd like to keep things simple.

Saker: Cool, the more the merrier. These games tend to fizzle out but I'll keep the story going with even one interested player!

I should be around a computer Mon, Tues, and Wed evenings, but will not be around Thur-Sun so don't think I'm running away!

Thanks for all the interest, send me character proposals, and I hope we can get things started next week!

Okay, one more question: are these more Jeans and T-shirt heroes, or Tights and a Cape?

My question(s):

What's the flavor of the game? Four-color or gritty? Are there any power concepts/origin backgrounds you don't want to see?

Any details on the Event? Did it involve any natural disasters (a potential source for origins)? Any occult or supernatural aspects to the Event?

Oh nooo! the return of the big bad copycat !
Bad Jason! bad! (forgive my old trauma ;) )

Good idea! Too bad I already brought mine into light.

Absolutely

Ok for now on i'll try to keep the rest in private^^
A shame I won't be able to spy on Saker.
He's good with builds! ;)
(On a side note, Triple Crown is a rough blue collar bar in my town!)

Hmmm

I PMed my build to Dustland trying to avoid quick bricks like Overdrive are tough for me. Although not a very original build, I almost succeeded. And I created some fun role-play opportunity with the background. Should be fun!

Gah! You guys are on the ball; I just saw I have half a dozen pms waiting for me.

I'm not trying to be a * about the keeping characters secret thing, just thought it'd be more fun for you guys. If you're proud of what you've made or need help with the build, feel free to bounce the character off one another!

On to the questions...
Boost: For the most part Jeans and T-Shirts. That's not saying some Novas don't work hard to keep their id's secret, but if you suddenly found yourself with super powers, would you start wearing a cape? Maybe you would :) but keep in mind what most people would do.

Nestor: Grittier; chaos and fear rule the world at the moment. I'd prefer nothing too silly, but if it's compelling, go for it. I'll base the challenges around the characters' abilities so feel free to create what you want.

Finding out the nature of The Event will play a huge part in the story, so I can't give too much away! I think the rest of your questions would best be handled over the course of the game...

Volsung: I have no idea what you're talking about in your first two sentences :)

Ok, I'll read the pm's and respond to everyone this evening!
