When Day and Dream Unite

Post by Dustland »

[Kuddos to you if you recognize the title!]

I've been kicking around an idea for a bit and I thought I'd air it out here to see if anyone would be interested in playing in this setting.

Without giving too much away, the characters have volunteered for a research program at a major university. They are studying a phenomenon that has recently come to light, the Shared Dreaming Environment, commonly called the Dreamlands, and are putting subjects into the deepest dream state to enter this lucid dreaming realm that is a patchwork of humanity's dreams and memories, both past and present.

Within the dream, the characters take on an avatar that is related in many ways to their waking-self. However in the Dreamlands they can possess incredible abilities and powers, even existing in a non-human body!

The early stages of the game will revolve around the characters familiarizing themselves with the Dreamlands, their avatars, and the rules that govern this realm (I use the term rules loosely). But when the dream and waking life begin to overlap, all * breaks loose...

Sounds a nice refreshment on the norm "SuperSerumRadiationMutation" hero world.

The scenario looks familiar somehow (like a thing I've read sometime ago, but don't remember right away where).

The impending "crash" of reallities is something cool, that can provide a sense of inpending doom, that is normaly hard to make. The discovery of the nature of the worlds, of the character powers and of the new world brings enormous character development and roleplaying oportunities.

To summarize: Yes I would like to play in that world!

Yah urbwar, but no more references to Portnoys!

Well, I drew inspiration from a number of sources; Inception, Lovecraft's Dreamlands, S. King's Talisman, and of course Nightmare on Elm Street!

Well Protheuz, glad to hear you're interested! If I can wrangle up two or three more players, I'll start to put it together. If you want to knock it around the old brain pan, I figure character creation will go something like this:

1) Waking Self: 15 pts; all characters will be considered "Normal" but will not gain an advantage being so.

2) Dreaming Self: 25 pts; the avatar may have any form and/or powers that are available in BASH! However, I'd like for the avatar to have some intimate connection to the character.

For instance, someone with a great passion for dogs may in the Dreamlands appear as a dog or a dog-man. A crippled person may be a fleet-footed speedester, reflecting their dream of being whole again.

Just something to think about.

I am... intrigued.

Ah, who am I kidding, sounds wicked cool. :)

Are you angling for Jungian-style archetypes, similar to Scott Bennie's Gestalt campaign (a book worth getting, even if you don't play Hero Games) or just stream-of-consciousness weirdness? ("Oh, look! It's raining chicken soup again!")

Will the theme be primarily one of exploration and discovery (not just of the Dreamlamds, but the characters themselves and the very meaning of reality), or will there be a threat within this new world that the heroes will have to defeat?

For some reason I'm getting a sort of Stargate SG-1 vibe to this. Don't know if I'm off-track there or not.

I would LOVE to do this, but have too much on my plate at the moment. I'm looking forward to reading it, though, and maybe I can join in somewhere down the line if an opening appears. Good luck!

Nestor: First, glad you're interested! And of course more than welcome in the game if it moves forward.

I had to look up Gestalt and I may grab it some time, interesting setting! But no, the characters will be more a study in introspection than archetypes come to life (unless the character has some desire to represent an archetype for some reason in real life!)

No, the Dreamlands will not be so random; the landscape is created from the memories of millions of people, so unless everyone starts to think it really does rain chicken soup, it won't in the Dreamlands. Of course a powerful Dreamer could change all that...

This is a really difficult concept for me to describe succinctly; maybe a short story is in order. Or maybe a couple of fools, er, players could just jump aboard and we'll all learn about the Dreamlands together :)

Lindharin: Just let me know; this game will really lend itself to people coming and going. It can easily be played off as the character has left the facility or for some reason isn't able to enter the Dreamlands for some time. Even mid-encounter a character might wake up and will not be involved the rest of the scene.

Cool man!

I'll start working on some ideas for a character and his alter-ego, dream reflection!
