Kris Smith commissions (Simius/Super Apes added 5-5-14)

Post by urbwar »

As I've been contemplating taking the plunge into doing some desktop publishing, I've been buying some art from a talented artist named Kris Smith. I decided to share some of the stuff he's done for me, cause I'm in a sharing mood :D

I'll be sharing material that I won't likely be using in any possible products, so feel free to use them for yourselves.

If you want to see more of his work, he has a deviant art page here

First up is a commission of an actual Golden Age super named Mirror Man. He had this magic cloak that allowed him to teleport through mirrors, amongst others.

Hope you all like!

Next up is another Golden Age comic character named Wonder Man. He was one of the many Superman wannabes of the Golden Age, and only had 1 actual comic appearance. His powers came from a magic ring of Tibetan Origin.

This next piece is an original character, though she is heavily inspired (both power and image wise) by The Black Canary. And in keeping with the color scheme of the first two pieces, her outfit is red.

I present to you, the sonic screaming, brass knuckle wielding, Scarlet Siren!

One thing that attracted me to him was his style reminds me of the DC Animated stuff, but isn't exactly like it. He's done alot of Transformers, GI Joe and Gargoyles on his deviant art page, but told me when he sent me Scarlet Siren that he really likes doing Golden Age heroes. She's part of a team I'm creating for a one shot I hope to run in September. When he gets more of them done, I'll post the art for those as well (and eventually character sheets when I write them all up)

Yeah, it's almost a new 'style' in it's own right. I definately dig it!

thanks guys. I'll be sure to let him know people like his work. He's got very reasonable prices, so between him and Dan (Alienmatermind), I'm getting alot of artwork done in the next few weeks!

Edit: Just realized all 3 characters also have blond hair, so that's 3 things they have in common (blond hair, red costumes, and being GA supers!)

The first 2 were ones I had him do just for me. They are original Golden Age heroes that afaik, are in public domain.

The 3rd one, Scarlet Siren, is for a one shot I hope to run in September. She will be one of the character choices to play in that game.

If I do decide to publish something though, his work is definitely going to be in there. I've got some other pieces just for that purpose, but I'm still in the beginner stage of learning how to do all this stuff

Let me know if you decide to publish anything... I have been in and out of the RPG industry (between deployments) so if you need a hand let me know.

Walt

Walt,

I will definitely do so! Having seen you on other forums (like rpg.net and the HERO boards), I know you are an established person. I have good ideas, but I've always been bad about putting it down on paper (so to speak). I know nothing about desktop publishing, so I need to learn that first. I've had some experience with basic layouts when I used to do a music fanzine, but that was using Pagemaker, not a pdf making program.

I figure there is no rush to do anything, which is one of the reasons I work with Kris. He has some other gigs, along with real life, so my slow pace suits him. But once I start getting closer to making a real commitment, I will contact you.

Anyways, glad everyone likes the art. Should hopefully have another original hero or two to share in the next couple of days.

Pagemaker is all you need for PDF layouts man, just need to export them or print them in pdf format after that.

Don't waste money on buying Acrobat, Pagemaker is all you need for that.

Photoshop too ;)
