Honor + Intrigue Second Edition?

Post by The_GIT »

So, I know this has been asked before but it was a very, very long time ago...will there ever be a second edition of Honor + intrigue, preferably with a hardback option and maybe using some of the artwork from the Spanish edition?

Print On Demand options are now extensive (DriveThru is producing some good quality books) so it does seem like a very good opportunity. It would also be a good time to add in the extra fighting styles and other rule tweaks, and maybe even add in the non-human races from the Spanish H+I Adventure Book.

Come on Bashman, you know it makes sense :)

I have been mulling it, which is why I did not go through the time and expense of setting up a POD on Drivethru (setting one up on Lulu is far easier so I did that as a stopgap measure).

The Spanish edition had far less new artwork than I was hoping for (though what there is looks very good) so I had begun to contract new artwork. Before I can even consider a second edition of H+I, however, I have to finish Awesome Powers. I'm currently working on Volume 16 of 17; after that will be a matter of editing it into a single "Omnibus" Book.

However, I have been running an Honor + Intrigue campaign for the last 2 years (which is coming to its finale). Part of that campaign has involved revising certain rules and writing completely new rules options, which I've used my group as playtesters to do. I've compiled all these as the campaign has run its course and have slowly begun to build what I think would be the basis of a second Honor + Intrigue book. This would be a supplement to the game, not a standalone book. So far just a sample of what I have in it so far:

Spacefaring Swashbuckling rules with careers, hazards, equipment and vehicles for sci-fi games.
Rules for nonhuman PCs and a more high-fantasy alternative for magic, including a Spellcaster Career.
New and optional rules for for chase scenes, barroom brawls & nonlethal combat, boss monsters, players rolling for defense, cinematic scenes (as a way to prevent "the grind" from taking over), Horror rules, Encumberance optional rule, Alternative Faster Initiative method (making it into a Career test), Language Barrier Rules (fun for when someone has a language at "Basic" but even more fun when they don't have any language in common at all), alternative (slower) healing rules, and a few more things.
A sample high-fantasy swashbuckling adventure

I would probably put out this handbook before I fully commit to a second edition/printing of Honor + Intrigue. Part of the reason is that I might consider making some of these optional rules into the base rule-- I've been very happy with the revised Chase Scene and Initiative rules for instance, but I would want to see how well they are received by players.

The inspiration for the Starfaring rules was that one of my players volunteered to GM a game set in a galaxy far far away and he chose to use Honor + Intrigue to run it. So the two of us kitbashed a very quick sci-fi adaptation for it. I have periodically tweeked it and expanded upon it.

The main take-away from this is that Honor+Intrigue is still going to get some love moving forward :D I can't wait :P

I'd love to see this supplemental book for H+I. The idea of adding a layer of arcane magic to the rules sounds like great fun!

I'm also interested in the sci-fi adaptation. I hope that you could sketch out a starter for a setting to go along with it. I remember as a kid, shortly after Star Wars came out, my brother, friends and I used to play 'Space-kateers'. Having been equal fans with the Three Musketeers movies, we blended the two, pretending to be space swashbucklers, wielding lightsabers and rescuing interstellar princesses from danger.

You will probably enjoy this supplement then, as "Rockets & Rapiers" was definitely one of the things we were aiming for with it.
