Tolkien Elves in Legends of Steel

Post by fairytalejedi »

Hello, all. Long time, no see. :)

I've had an idea recently to revisit Middle Earth as a game setting, but I also thought about a Legends of Steel game with Tolkien style races. So I've come up with a basic package for a Tolkien elf, but it raises the question of buying Advantages in LoS with points rather than just by taking an equal number of Disadvantages, because Tolkien style elves are ridiculously Advantage-heavy.

Here's the basic elf package:

Advantages: Appeal, Disease Immunity, Fearless, Good Night Vision, Longevity, Quick Healer, Short Sleep

Backgrounds: Keen Vision, Talk to Animals 3

Powers: Resistance 2 (cold, heat)

If Advantages cost 1 pt each as in BASH! UE this is feasible. Thoughts on using this point-buy method for Advantages?

Another option would be you start each adventure with 1 Setback per Advantage that isn't offset by a Disadvantage, perhaps representing that elves are cool but suffer from a "doom of elder races" thing.

Note: Magic and Special Origin could be common Advantages too, particularly Special Origin as I picture many elves having one particular magical power which is innate in them, rather than being full-fledged spell casters. Also the Outsider Disadvantage would seem appropriate since elves usually keep to themselves.

I'm not as familiar with Legends of Steel as I am with Ultimate Edition, but I feel like the paying of extra advantages at 1-point each is a fair, point cost trade off. My first Tolkien Elf exposure was through the old Return of the King animated movie, and I was in love with the depiction of Elrond with the star-like crown above his head. I like the idea you have for giving elves the ability to buy unique magical powers. I always got the sense that they were often unique beings, even among their own kind.

I remember that star crown! If they were determined to * up the Hobbit movies as bad as they did, they should've gone ahead and given Elrond the star crown (star tiara? tistara?) :D

Celwen

Going with the idea of simply adding fantasy races to Legends of Steel, I decided to put an elven kingdom in the Great Forest between the two rivers. It's called Tuivor (which translates as 'enduring spring' in Tolkien's elvish).

Here is a character from Tuivor...

She has 3 individual Setbacks per adventure due to having 5 Advantages vs. 2 Disadvantages.

And for those who have a Tolkien fetish, all the elvish is accurate, including Celwen's name which means 'running maiden' (as in running water). 8-)

And another fantasy race character for good measure, a halfling rogue from the Southern Kingdoms. 8-)

Adding another character sheet just to round things out. He may not be the more trustworthy guy in the world, but he's good in a fight. :)

These look really good. But did you know we have a book of fantasy races for BASH! Fantasy already?

There is also a Magic Book and a book of magic items as well.

Thanks, BASHMAN. :)

Yes, I have those supplements. Although I forgot about the grimoire while making Celwen, but I don't think her one power needs it.

For her elfness, I ended up doing something between a generic fantasy elf and a Tolkien elf - not superpowered quite to the extent of Tolkien lore, but still racially buffed.
