Question on DENSITY INCREASE power.

Post by MrJupiter »

This alternate power costs one extra point to purchase beyond the regular price for Growth. I was wondering if the Defense Dice Penalty is disregarded since the hero isn't necessarily a bigger target to hit? Would be a fair enough trade off for having to worry about falling through a floor? That is how the rules seem to read to me, but I just wanted to make sure.

Thanks

You still get the defense penalty. It ain't easy being lead.

My turn to raise the dead (thread):

Should Density Increase affect Jumping and Swimming in a negative way?

I assume the point increase is due to not having the physical inconveniences of maneuvering around in giant size (entering buildings, etc).

As for jumping and swimming, since Brawn is increased, presumably so are the Jump and Swim scores, so that it balances out, On the other hand, if you buy DI with the Limitation: No Brawn Increase (maybe you just become really hard, think Stone Boy of the Legion of Substitute Heroes) you'll likely sink- like a stone.

Does Brawn increase? I thought Growth and DI just gave +5 bonus to Brawn rolls of damage and soak. So, you would still calculate jumping and swimming on the base Brawn level. No?

Your actual Brawn score doesn't change, but your adjusted lifting ability becomes equal to half your new body weight (or stays at your normal, Brawn-based lifting capacity, whichever is highest).

My point is that apparently, jump and swim are not affected (or it would be pointed out) presumably because the increases in Brawn balance the gain in mass.

I think there was a Disad or Limitation in that issue of AP that dealt with Density Increase that was to the effect of you are completely unable to swim-- you just sink straight down like a rock.

AP # 1 reads: Density Increase, however, is very effective protection against pressure, and the bonus to
soak is added (although you are probably sinking a lot faster).

AP #11 reads: You make your body several times more dense than it normally is, rendering your flesh like solid metal and giving you superhuman strength and toughness, though you also become much heavier, sinking to the bottom of water or possibly crashing through the floor.

So apparently it does cancel buoyancy, unless some other abiliy (like Super-Swimming) is added.

I was thinking there was also specifically some sort of Disad or Limitation that makes it so you cannot swim at all.
