Dice Pool

Post by dugfromthearth »

My only real problem with BASH is how the die roll scales.
Multiplier 9 vs 8 and if 9 rolls a 7, the 8 can beat it by rolling an 8.
Multiplier 3 vs 2 and if the 3 rolls a 7, the 2 needs an 11 to beat it.

The difference of x1 varies greatly in how much it affects combat based on how high the multipliers are.

So I am working with playing BASH as a dice pool game. Roll the number of dice equal to your multiplier - rolls of a 4-6 are a success. Count the successes and compare.

Treat each die success as 10pts of success in the BASH rules. So Heroes have 10 hit points instead of 100.

A +1 dice bonus is equal to +1d
A +1 multiplier bonus is equal to +1d
A +10 result bonus is equal to +1d
For every 10 difficulty an action requires in BASH, it requires 1 success instead.
10 Hits is 1 hit point.
1 Soak is 2d Soak

What I have not decided is what a Hero Point is worth. I am thinking of making it worth +1d to the roll, although that does not guarantee success in the way a Hero Point normally does. But giving +1 success seems too powerful.

I'm curious what a Hero Die would do? Reroll the entire dice pool maybe? Maybe just +3 Successes automatically? Maybe a choice of both?

Also if you are doing 50/50 on the die = success, you don't need to limit it to d6s. You could do "Any even number" and roll a fist full of polyhedral dice (or even flip some coins, Heads = Even).

As for Hero Points, maybe have it be +1 Success for every 2 you spend? If you want to spend just 1 point, you get to roll an extra die?

Yeah, I don't know how Hero Dice would work exactly - I was thinking re-roll the whole thing.

Your Hero Points idea is good - 2 gives you an automatic success, 1 gives you an extra die.

You could do odds/evens - with the people I play with I think sorting 4-6 is easier than odd/even. But you could do it either way. And having played Champions and Shadow Run in the past we have a lot of d6.

I like this idea of using the multiplier as a dice pool. What if the "Hero Die" could buy a small pool of bonus "pips" that you could use to adjust the result of the dice you rolled as an alternative to giving you one extra die to cast when making a roll?

Say one Hero Die is worth 3 pips and Andrea rolled three dice for her score of Brawn 3 and got a 2, 1, and 3 as results (yikes!). She decides to spend a Hero Dice for some adjustable pips. Since she could arrange her 3 pips in any way she wanted to those numbers, she turns her 2 into a 4 (two pips) and her 3 into a 4 (1 pip) turning a complete failure into two successes.

In a similar fashion, 2 Hero Points could buy 1 pip. With a Hero Die being worth 5 Hero Points you would get a discount on your third pip (3 pips for 5 points, not 6).

Even a Brawn 1 character could guarantee at least one success with a Hero Die despite a roll result of 1.
