How much would you pay?

Runequest 6 is due out soon and is going to be about 450 pages, soft cover for $62 + $10 shipping (so $72 obviously). You also get the PDF if you order from the publisher.

You can get the Legend RPG PDF for only $1 now (similar D100 system)...so I'm not getting the $72 pricing.

Initially I was disappointed and thought they were crazy. But given the size and the "one book to cover everything so you don't have to buy other core books" philosophy, I'm no longer sure.

At this price I'll think they'll sell to the die-hards but have almost no chance to gain new players. Maybe they even don't expect to get any new players into tabletop RPG's? (And I'm sure the influx of any new doesn't keep up with us old fogey's dying out).

I'm not promoting or "bashing" a competitor ....just trying to gauge what you guys think about the pricing.

So, what is the most you would pay for an RPG?

Honestly there's so many great rpgs out there for under $20 (I use pdfs almost esclusively), I can't imagine paying anything close to that. I'd have to be uber vested into a particular system/setting to even get near $40.

Take DnD Next for instance; I've killed characters in every edition since 1e/Red Box, so despite the fact that I probably won't even play it, I'm willing to chunk $40 at the Player's Handbook.

Like you said, I don't think their goal is to bring in new players, it's just to get people vested in the setting to buy one more book.

Is it really a one-book Runequest? Will all the Glorantha stuff be included?

Like you say it sounds like a collector's edition aimed at existing fans. It's hard to imagine someone picking it up on a whim at that price.

Personally I pretty much go 100% pdf these days. 15.00 gbp is about my upper limit for a core book in this format.

Like Dustland I will almost certainly buy D&D 5e, possibly even the dead tree version, although I am currently very interested in Myth & Magic. It's based on 2nd edition and reminds me of playing the Baldur's Gate PC games back in the day

Right after I picked up Hunter: The Vigil, I realized that I don't have the stomach to try and absorb large books. Anything over 300 pages and I don't even consider it! It's too bad with Hunters as I would have really liked the setting.

For me, recently starting to collect solid books again, I like a book about 120 to 160 pages priced between $25 and $45. I'd prefer a hardcover, for durablility, and would be willing to go as high as $60 for a book that I really wanted (but it would be a while before I purchased it).

I'll admit that for the last year I've been considering an Android-powered tablet which might be pretty handy for the hordes of PDFs I've collected over the years.

PDF pricing is another thing. I like games (like BASH in size and scope) for about $10 to $15, but I'd go as high as $25 for a must-have! A 5-pack of villains for not less than $3 (cause I feel they are ripping themselves off - that is if the producer has invested in original art). Adventures in the $4 to $7 price range based upon page count, art, and graphics (though I'd only pay $1 for something like a Savage Worlds: One Sheet).

I love having game stuff on my tablet! You should definitely get one, Mr Jupiter. You'll be glad you did.

As for Rune Quest, I've never played it, and this new book doesn't make me want to. I can get much more bang for the buck with other games, so I'm just not going to try something if this is how it's available.

If you think that price is high, check out the Kickstarter for Traveller 5. $51 gets you the pdf, and 100 the hardcover book.

RuneQuest is crunchier than a box of cogs and it's attempt to simulate combat to a 'realistic' level just kills it.
Too much money for too many rules that just get in the way of good gaming - but that's just my opinion.

And the magic sucks.

Probably why I've not played it since about 1985.

The older I get the less I want when it comes to mechanics.

$51 for a PDF? They must be marketing to people who run their games at the country club.

That's one of the reasons I didn't pick up Hero 6th Ed. despite having played Champions since 1st Edition. Paying over $80 for two huge books just to get the core rules (no genre information, just the basic system) was just too much.

I've paid as much as $50 for a book, but a lot of it depends on the content. For that much, I'm expecting to get a game I can run/play without additional purchases.

I'm buying a lot of PDFs these days, but unfortunately I've yet to find a tablet that runs a full-featured PDF reader (and by that I mean one that includes TOC and search features, and doesn't take up to a minute to load a graphics-heavy page).

I have an LG G-Slate. Fast responsive duocore. Displays pdf's like a champ. Changed my book buying habits.

And the Bash UE PDF looks great on it

Do I really need another RPG I'll never play just to have it to read?

PS- I've had BASH on my Nook Tablet for months and it looks good - perhaps a little too much scrolling around on a 7 inch screen - but the Nook was an Xmas gift so I can't complain

I have a nook color as well (I don't like to take my Tablet with me when I am on Military Duty so I just take that. Fits into my bug out bag perfectly and has all my necessary distractions for down time).

It is hard to go from the 10.3 in screen to the 7 inch but we suffer through it.

In any case I hope that the Master-BASHer continues to support viewing in this format (as well as standard PDF viewing as when we go from the tablet to the big screen you can tell it was formatted at the lower resolution).
