Resistance

Post by Baelor »

So I am currently building an NPC sorceress for a magically themed campaign I am starting. I have decided to give her Resistance - Magic to make her extra tough against magic using characters, of which there are a fair few. As written, this seems perhaps too general an application of the Resistance power, which cost 1 Point for 2 resistances. I am considering a change to the power which would grant specific resistances [fire, sonic, lightning, magnetism, etc] at the rate of 2 for 1 Point, but more general resistances at a cost of 1 for 1 Point.

This would largely depend on the campaign. magic would be much more common in a magical campaign of course. Or a future campaign which relies heavily on lasers might make lasers a general resistance.

By the way, as I envision it, Magic Resistance would work against magical spells or direct effects - like a flame spell, a Dazing Spell or a magical wall of Force. Magically summoned or conjured creatures. or magic items would not be affected. So a summoned creature, though magically brought into being, could attack normally. As could a fighter using a magical sword. And A magical spell that grants you Hydrokinesis could affect you because the water is there and real. the magic just controls it.

Any thoughts?

depending on the type of magic used - say if they're elemental and ritual based - could you use a combination of resistance and something like armour or even deflect?

I.e the character could be highly resistant to ritual magic, seems to be able to withstand a good burning spell and water, air and earth spells seem to bounce off the character?

Sounds like a solid house rule to me.

The way I see the character, The Twisted Stave grants her Magic Resistance because it is filled with the power of a primordial god of magic. Magical attacks directed at the possessor of the staff have trouble affecting the wielder or the staff. Indirect attacks that are simply brought into effect by magic do not.

And of course, if the PCs get the staff away from her, she is suddenly easier to deal with.
