Converting player descriptions into rules help.

Post by bigsteveuk »

Had my best session of Bash tonight, finally after 4 sessions it seems to of clicked, combat flowed, characters started coming up with cool descriptions and it all worked swimmingly.

They are moving away from the I hit it, into more narrative, I want to encourage this and I need some help on how to turn player descriptions into rules.

So how would you guys handle the following.

Scene 2 large dinosaurs are terrorizing the streets of London (long story) and our players arrive on the scene. How would you handle the following (what would you get them to roll and what is the effect):-

1. Jamming his shield into ones mouth to jam its jaw open
2. Charging up behind one trying to hamstring it and then diving between it’s legs to get the other leg
3. Diving of a building feet first into an eye
4. Firing an explosive bolt into its mouth when it roared so it swallowed it
5. Jamming open ones mouth with a grandfather clock
6. Firing a grapple bolt to entangle it’s mouth

Cheers,

Steve

1. Called shot. Of course, the dinosaur can always *try* to bite the shield in half (though it's probably very sturdy).

2. That sounds like 2 attacks (hamstringing it and then tackling its other leg). The first is a called shot, the second is wrestling.

3. Called shot for damage Slam attack, it sounds like. The fact that you are doing this with a "falling" start, would also add a momentum boost. And that eye has to be pretty enormous.

4. Probably just a called shot for damage.

5. See #1

6. A power stunt to use Immobilize <Limit>, unless he has Gadgeteer, in which case it is a Power Trick.

Cheers for the reply bashman, so what would the effect be, for example.

1. Tough Brawn check to crush shield
2. Minor (1 leg) Major (both legs) hindrance
3. As you stated
4. +10 dmg?
5. As 1
6. As stated.

The shield has Hits and Soak. So each round, you could let the creature roll a Brawn check (I wouldn't add the damage from the teeth if he has special attack) against the shield. Whatever gets by the soak does damage to it.

Even if the shield isn't bought as Easily Broken, it still has Hits and Soak. 20 Hits x Level and 10 Soak x Level of the highest level power the shield is associated with. Of course, if the shield is unbreakable or something, I'd count that as an enhancement to put on it.

2. That sounds good to me.

4. Yes, +10 damage. If you want to do more, you need to power stunt Attack Weak Point. Don't forget also that the insides of that creature won't have much of a soak. I wouldn't allow its Armor or Size to be a factor.

6. To clarify the limit on Immobilize would be that it only affects part of the creature. It could be used to tie up its mouth, or to tie up its legs, etc, but cannot immobilize its whole body. Another, weirder, way to do this would be to use Telekinesis to represent the rope, and use it to "wrestle" grappling and restraining the beast; but that would be more for a lasso where you are still holding onto the rope controlling it.

Great rulings, this is the sort of stuff I wanted to know.

This was very helpful.

One thing if you ever get a chance a post on how to add swash and buckle to your scenarios would get my vote. This may be extra helpful with Honour and Intrigue on the way.

Cutting down candelabras, leaping down sails using a knife, upturning tables, swinging into combat etc, etc.
