Resistance Application

Post by Baelor »

OK. In our last issue of The New Centurions, we ran into a question on Resistance.

The way I have been applying it has been to reduce the full damage with the character's Soak roll, then cut the remaining damage in half if there is an applicable resistance. But one of my players asked me if there was any ruling to show that this was how it was done, because the wording is ambiguous. He said that there is nothing in the wording that would rule out reducing rolled damage with Resistance, THEN applying the Soak total.

Has this been addressed before? I took a look, but could not find anything.

Thanks,

Baelor

I would like to apply for the Resistance...

Oh wrong forum. I believe you halve the damage before Soak. Resistance is almost as powerful as Immunity with a high Soak.

cheers

I've applied it after the Soak roll just because of this issue. If it's applied before the Soak, it's almost as good as Immunity.

If you apply it after the Soak roll, the character is still taking some damage (assuming it gets through Soak) but it just doesn't hurt them nearly as much as it would someone else.

This is the way I have been leaning too, Dustland, for the reasons you state.

I like the idea of resistance taking a bunch of the punch out of a BIG hit, but not negating it entirely. Especially at half the cost of Immunity, and the possibility of as many as 10 things you can be resistant to.

I appreciate the comments. If Bashman could provide his input, I would appreciate the official opinion. too.

Actually that is up to Narrator's choice. I can see either method being perfectly valid. If you want a grittier game, have it apply after the soak, if you want a more 4 color game, apply it before soak.

OK. Thanks for the info. I plan to talk to my players about it and see how they feel. With the understanding that however it is applied, it will affect them AND the rest of the world.

Bah, resistance is futile so I don't know why we're having this discussion.
