Advantage: Special Weapon

Post by MrJupiter »

I was thinking that it might be cool to have an advantage that offers the character a special weapon, with unique abilities without being a free power grab: while still allowing the hero to use his/her/its various Intense Training Powers. I came up with this and was wondering your thoughts:
Special Weapon – the character possesses a unique weapon that, despite having typical combat statistics (see page 25 of BASH:UE), possesses one additional Special Quality for free. Special Qualities:
Nigh Unbreakable: This weapon is very, very difficult to destroy (it has 160 Hits and 40 Soak).
Returns to Owner: The item will return to the character that has this advantage; if the two are ever separated this weapon will return within 1d6 days (or 1d6 hours if a Hero/Villain die is spent). It will remain thus until the owner freely transfers ownership of the item to another character; usually requiring a ritual.
Extra Damage: Either a +1 DM when used against a general type of adversary (i.e. +1 DM vs. Orcs), or a +2 DM when used against a specific opponent (i.e. +2 DM vs. Modred the Sorceror).
Greater Range: This weapon has double the range normally available to its type.
Double Ammo: The ammunition capacity of this weapon is doubled.
Biometric Key: Only the character with this advantage may use this weapon. If the weapon is a melee weapon, with no discernable ‘locking mechanism’, then anyone other than the rightful owner suffers a -4 Dice penalty when trying to use it (maybe the weapon magically or mechanically unbalances itself or delivers a distracting and numbing electric charge).

Additionally, the player may add extra powers to the Special Weapon by spending character points at character creation and, as any other device, must have an appropriate disadvantage.

Interesting. I like the variety of options this allows.

Thanks. It might be nicer if there was a couple more with more of a high-tech feel, but my imagination pooped out.

I'm just about to post an archetype with Special Weapon as an option. [Edit: done.]

Thanks Master-X. I was thinking of the Special Weapon as being something interesting and unique but not as world shattering as say Thor's Mjolner or Arthur's Excalliber (though this sword comes pretty close to it). Those items would definately be built as gadgets.

There are sooooooooooooooooooo many items in comic book superheros lore you could model for ideas like this. I dig the idea.

You forgot one of my favorites (of Mjolnir) that they actually used as a plot element, that I've never ever seen, in the Thor movie.

Worthy: The wielder must be worthy or in some other way appropriate to pick up, hold or wield this item. Define the condition(s) that needs to be met at creation.
Example: Impossibly heavy, no one may pick up the hammer lest he be "worthy". Etched on the side of the hammer reads the inscription: "Whosoever holds this hammer, if he be worthy, shall possess the power of the Thunder God." The "worth" to posses the hammer is defined by the All-Father God (Narrator), generally upholding the honor and values of a Thunder God.

Right On! Maybe what you could do is define a baling set of weapon enhancement and limitation.

ex:
- extra x1 lightning damage [enhance]
- must be Worthy - defined as "--" [Limit]

- extra Confusion 1 vs. demons [enhance]
- cannot be used against the 'innocent' [Limit]

I love the special weapons ideas too. Maybe Worthy is an Enhancement that has an attack power targeting an unworthy weilder equal to the points of the weapon.

Worthy is a definate cool idea. I was trying to do something like this with the Biometric Key, but I went downscale with the implimentation because Special Weapon was intended for a lower scale application than something like Thor's hammer.

But Worthy would, as Saker mentioned, be a freak'n awesome Device Enhancement for powers built as super gadets!

Thor: "Easily Taken? Rrrrriiight... Just try to take it from me villain!"

Ooh, I could just see some character laying down his/her "Worthy" weapon as a trap, only to have the villain walk by, pick it up and leave with it with no harm done. Whoops!

Lol! Maybe your characer isn't the only worthy one around. Or maybe the villain exists outside of the condiditons (how do one define worthy?).
