How do you build: Power Theft?

Post by Dragonfly »

Hey guys,

Months ago, AslanC posted the following build for a power theft power. I thought it was pretty cool. Here it is:

Absorption: Continual Damage x5, LINKED with Nullification 5, Telepath 2 (she gains their memories), and Copycat 10 [Limitation: must have skin-to skin contact- damage ends with the touch & see below; Limitation: Always On] 15pts

The problem, of course, is that this is now "illegal" by RAW. You can't link more than two powers these days. SO - how would you build this effect NOW?

I'm thinking that you could split it into two powers:

Power Absoprtion Attack: Continual Damage 5 (Enhancement: Linked to Nullification 5] Limitation: Always On, Limitation: Must have skin to skin contact]), 6 pts.

Power Theft: Copycat 10 (Enhancement: Linked to Telepath 2, Limitation: Always triggered by use of Power Absorption Attack), 11 pts.

What do you think? Does this work? Am I missing something?

Best,

I'm confused as to what you're trying to achieve.

So with the PAA, you're causing continual damage and nullifying a target's power? What is the damage? Is this supposed to be a Rogue-type power?

Then with PT, you're using another power (PAA) as the trigger...

So the PT happens the page after PAA? I don't think that'd be a problem.

Or are you trying to skirt the rules and have a second power trigger in the same panel as the first? I wouldn't allow this in my game because you could theoretically "link" a whole ton of powers by having them triggered by your first power.

Hi Dustland,

Thanks for the reply. Yes, this is essentially Rogue's power, being applied to a guy named Power Pirate.

I'm not trying to skirt the rules. I'm the GM, not the player, so I'm not trying to pull one over on anyone. Besides, I just don't think that way. Still, it's a fair question. :)

Yes, I was thinking that the Power Theft would activate the panel after the Power Absorption Attack. Panels are only about 1 second each, so I think the Power Theft kicking in the panel after the target is hurt still works to simulate what rogue does in the comics.

Why not have the telepathy not be linked? Just make it have the limitation that it is touch (skin to skin) only? Since the other powers also trigger under that same condition, that would work.

Add Copycat 10 + Nullification 5 <skin> 11pts and Continual Damage 5 <skin> 4pts, and Telepathy 2 <Touch> 1pt

Total for all this is 16pts.

Hey BASHMAN:

Thanks for the feedback! Just to make certain, you are proposing the following:

Copycat 10 (Enhancement: Linked to Nullification 5, Limitation: Must touch skin), 11 pts.

Continual Damage 5 (Limitation: Always on, Limitation: Must touch skin), 4 pts.

Telepathy 2 (Limitation: Always on, Limitation: Must touch skin), 1 pt.

Is that right? I figure that I need to add the "always on" limitation if I want the Continual Damage and Telepathy to activate every time the Copycat goes off.

Anyway, thanks for the help!

Oooo.... "Limitation: Always On" helps that nicely. I see why there's the "need" for that, that way!
My question though.
Are you giving more than -1 Limitation point build break. Because (as I understand it) it's against the RAW to have more than one Limitation point break per power.

You can have more than one limitation on a power but you only recieve a 1-point break on power cost.

Continual Damage 5 (Limitation: Always on, Limitation: Must touch skin), 4 pts.

Telepathy 2 (Limitation: Always on, Limitation: Must touch skin), 1 pt.

Both powers submitted by Dragonfly only reduce the overall cost by one point.

Sometimes, even though it is against Munchkinism, a power might need a couple of limitations before it fits the theme of a hero or villain just right.
