Boost for skills

Post by Saker »

Could you use Boost to Agility and Mind to affect only skills as opposed to Attack or Defense? As opposed to to Skillful, it would only give you one extra skill but also raise the multiplier for all the other skills.

cheers

Yes, you absolutely can do that.

I know I've done it with a few of my character builds as a 'house rule'. I'm glad to hear from BASHMAN on this and effectively lifting this practice form into official legitimacy.

Reed Richards and Henry Pym would be perfect examples for this.

Sort of. That's what I originally did with many of my builds - give someone like Hank Pym a Mind 2 with a Boost 2 (Mind - Only for Science and Technology Skills). Or Reed Richards with this same Boost power and a Mind 3.

In theory, I really like this, but it doesn't seem to work out in practical terms. Part of it is that such builds end up with fewer skills, which means that these characters have to then pay too many points to compensate. The other issue is that the BASH community doesn't seem to like a Reed Richards with a "so low" a Mind. I kinda felt like my builds were out-of-step with how things were normally done in the BASH gaming culture, so I've decided to flip it.

My Reed Richards build now has a Mind 5, but I'm designing a disadvantage that will impose a -2 multiplier penalty for purposes OTHER than Science and Technology rolls. I haven't named the Disadvantage yet, but it could be "Absent Minded Professor" or something of the sort.

Anyway, I'm not exactly disagreeing with you - just sharing some of my thinking in terms of grappling with these issues. :)

Best,

Two thoughts Dragonfly...

#1.
I enjoy BASH! rules because there are so many ways to go at building the same idea. And no two player/creators need to be wrong. We're just building differently.
Personally.... I think THAT should be noted as a big FEATURE of the BASH! system as a whole in the marketing scheme for players and Narrators.

#2.
BASH! has some holes.
Some blatant ones like the one you're noting. And a biggest problem with the RAW is the lack of a single location for ERRATA.

I would love to see a forum exclusively for "BASH! Errata" (such as the "Sticky" in this Rules forum) for any fan to comment and give suggested rule updates or grammatical editing fixes for any BASH! rulebook or supplement.
THEN...
have an official BASH! ERRATA forum, for Chris (or his rule/book editor) to make the OFFICIAL ruling. Whether it be simply copy/pasting and acknowledging a fan created rule (as your's above) that FITS the official BASH! RAW that will be reflected in any future printings.
And that also updates a short list of what will change or be added as Errata in the next shiny color printing from Cubicle 7.

I've seen so many "watch for the change to come" notes when people ask about rules here. It's getting frustrating to wait months and months using half baked fan-created ideas that I see *might* be implemented as a future BASH! errata.

I really enjoy using the BEST OFFICIAL rules for any game I'm playing. Sussing through answers on the forums helps, but it'd be great to have a simple forum for those answers to be copy/pasted (and officially updated) in a prominently displayed BASH! ERRATA section for the forums.

I've collected A LOT of those fan house rules (and noted the ones that BASHMAN says he agrees/approves of) for my gaming group.
I'd be happy to help organize/share those in some official way like this.

That's my fan wish. hehe.
