I was part of UC Davis' local gaming club- where we literally had a dozen pizzas every week. I just asked the guy who brought the pizzas if I could have them instead of them going in the trash. I took them home, washed them off, and had a dozen in one night.

heheh.... yeah - good one. I don't tend to go to alot of those things, hence looking for another option to get around 20 - that's way more than I would ever need.

What I've done in the past for flyers:

a. use a six-sided die, turning the side UP to show how many 10s of feet they are in the air. 1 = 10', 2=20', and so on. The only problem with that is the minis falling off, being unstable. Though if I really wanted I could just get some sticky-gum stuff.

b. (I like this option and may look more into it) I've used those clear-plastic rectangular little cases that most new sets of dice come in. I've used them for both "force fields" or "gelatinous cubes" to set down over minis (but that doesn't always work with odd shaped minis. And for FLIGHT just set them down on TOP of the little plastic-box. That works great, because they're just barely over 1" in width. I've not thought of it before but I might also glue a little laminated white page with "flying height" or something on it - then be able to easily mark height with a wipe-marker (I think the plastic wouldn't wipe off as easy as lamination plus it'd be hard to see on the clear plastic). Huh... I may try this! I have nearly 20 of those things floating around from old dice sets - not sure WHY I kept them... UNTIL NOW! If I do this, I'll post a picture later. hehe

Wow. I like THIS thread, it's helping me think of and think through ideas on the spot that I wouldn't have done before!!
NEAT!

thanks!

What's NEXT?!??
Either your ideas and uses of stuff - OR post a "problem" you'd like solved with some arts-n-crafty stuff for gaming. Maybe we can think of an option together!

Heck, it might be fun to make a mini-PDF to release for Supers RPGs of arts-n-crafts for things like this! heheh

hmmm... not sure. Do you mean these:

How do you differentiate the SIZE of the FF?

Another option I've done, two actually - for "fields" and effects (like explosions or spell effects in D&D):

1. colored pipe cleaners, bent to the correct size needs. This *sounds* like a great solution. However, I've found in practicality in-game play... it's not as great as it sounds. They're tedious to shape to the right size (even just big squares) and the often get hung up on any minis on the board, jostling them and moving things too much. Still, they're CHEAP and useful.
Image

2. clear grids: this is my favorite, but they're a little labor "intensive". I used a simple Word doc to make 1" grids, then made the correct sizes needed for different "blast" diameter (I made these for D&D3.5 & D&D4). Simple B/W lines, and I also typed what the template was in one of the squares on the grid for easy reference in-game-play. (like 30' Cone). Once done - Print them. Here's the TRICK.
At an office store you can buy clear plastic folder-binder dividers, the kind with the little tabs. They're clear, but multi-colored (about $3 for 8-10 pages at an office store). If you then cut those down to 8.5"x11" (cutting away the tabs) THEN you can print the grids directly onto the clear plastic. They're thin enough to go through a normal printer. But be careful, they'll smear easy. So the next step is to get a roll of clear "shelf paper" (about $5 for a big roll at any box-store) ... Simply layer on the shelf paper carefully on the INK side. That makes them not smear. And easy to write on if you want with a wipe-marker.

These work REALLY well. As you can slip them under the minis on the battle-grid and still SEE the map underneath. :)

These are what I used for grids as reference to make (for D&D anyway)

To cleanly remove the base from a mini use a jeweler's saw. Available at literally any craft store (that I've ever seen) for generally less than $15.

a few more projects...

In this picture I tried making those "height elevation" markers that I mentioned. You can see, these are just those clear plastic dice boxes - then I glued on a label - I made the label in Word, then printed and laminated it. (you can see that Print Screen of the file below). I needed to print/laminate a paper to label, because I tried writing on the clear plastic alone with a marker and the marker wouldn't come off well at all (no matter the marker type). The lamination sheet comes off with a swipe of the thumb - plus it's got a handy white label.

Also in the shot are some other minor things, the imitative markers that I've mentioned up-thread. That was for a previous game. When I make my BASH! "page" Priority Board, It'll be a little different. I'll post it, but I'm still thinking on the design...

Then I also printed and bound the PDFs of the BASH! book and Ion Guard. ALL of this for $9. (I printed the books at home)

I posed Spidey up on the elevation marker to show:

Here are the Print Screen shots of the Height Elevation screen and a shot of how I drop in my Initiative Markers to print in Word. Then laminate and cut, I then get some "business card" magnet labels and pop them on the back (they're sticky, made to put on a business card to put on the Fridge or whatever).

I also printed double-sided the several Narrator Screen pages as well as blowing up a bigger Die Roller chart WITH the BASH! index & table of contents on it's backside! And laminated them all for my use when Narrating.

On a side note... The print of the BASH! book, I decided to also print and add in to the book to bind - some of the things like:
- the Narrator Screen pages
- a bigger die roller chart (on the back of the book to view/use)
- and several statted characters, from the BASH! "iconic" heroes that are on the BASH! site as well as several comic icons that I've seen statted up.

I can make some of the files I've created available in PDF if anyone's interested.

thoughts?

for use with the circle cutter idea I wanted to be able to represent a large number of gangers, some SWAT, police dogs, soldiers, and innocent bystanders so I made these.

Something I took to using for Hero Points were these.

I love handouts and love making them. Once I get my setting into full swing, I have plans for all sorts of things. I think somewhere in the back of my brain, that's a reason I went into graphic design... to make cool handouts.

I paint my own figures and have quite an extensive collection. Mostly from Four color figs (super system), Some from Living Legends and some from Reaper miniatures.

Okay here is how to do it.

With Flickr you need to click "share this image" or "show all image sizes" Then get the image URL - which should end in jpg.

For instance: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3568/347 ... fe8394.jpg

Now to paste that into a post, you click the "Img" button at the top, paste in the URL, and click "Img" again.

It should look like this: [img']http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3568/347 ... fe8394.jpg[/img'] but without the apostrophes I added to mess up the code so you could see it.

If I didn't add the apostraphes, it would look like this:

You have to go to "show all image sizes" then click the size you want. THEN right click and select "copy image url" and use THAT to paste here with the IMG brackets.

You can also use plastic shot glasses and shooter glasses as flight stands, or as force fields. You can see a picture of some in action here:
