how many Advantages and/or Skills is too many?

Post by kevperrine »

I don't think it's specifically noted anywhere in the rules to LIMIT the number of Advantages (or Skills) you take. (Note: I enjoy using the Alternate Game Mechanics rule for also buying Advantages)

With that... how many do you think is unreasonable? Is there a limit that seems right. Or does it "harm the spirit/play" of the overall BASH! rules to take as many as you want?

I'm just wondering folk's thoughts...

Well at the end of the character sheet it states a cap of 3 adv/3disadv. I'm sure it says that somewhere in the rules too but I only found it on the character sheet after a quick glance.

I don't see why there would be a limit to the number of Skills taken and I don't believe there is one listed.

As to the alternate rule for purchasing Adv, it is terribly vague. Just be careful :)

Where? Which sheet? I don't see it in my PDF copy of the BASH UE rules.

It does note in the Alternate Mechanics section with Buying Advantages that: "The Narrator should be careful to limit how many the players take, though, and may decide that some Advantages are worth more than 1 point."
But that's all I've found.

If you suggest to be careful... Why? I'm curious to the reason for it, seeing if I'm missing something obviously "broken" about taking 4, 6, 8, 12 Advantages. Yep... it's alot, but I could see having a neat/fun character primarily with Ads, Skills and a few minor cost powers.

curious...

Aren't skills limted by the core stats of Brawn, agility and mind? As for advantages i've tried to limit it to 2 unless there is a really good reason.

There's the power SKILLFUL, that you can take multiple times if you want.

There are no limits to the number of times you purchase additional skills unless the narrator put a multiplier cap in the game (ie nothing higher than x6).

Personally I don't see Advantages as being all that powerful when you compare the cost vs what powers you could purchase with 1 character point.
On the character sheet?

Mine is at the very end of the pdf, after the index. Its not listed on the bookmarks so you have to manually scroll past the index. The second page is the Quick Build Sheet.

This was a joke referring to the vague quote out of the rules that you posted just before you asked this question.

Starting skills are allocated based on Agility and Mind (there are no core Brawn skills).

Other than taking something like Dumb Luck 10 times (and losing out on 10 pts worth of powers/attributes!), there's nothing unbalancing of uncapped Advantages as far as I'm concerned.

Yeah, and I've recently realized just how useful that Skillful power is when making low-powered heroes who are skilled with, say, Outdoor (Tracking) but - Ooops - they have a Mind score of 1 and aren't really that good at it!

Yep, Skillful. I'm going to get a lot more mileage out of that one...
