Gadgets: House rule

Many people deem that the Conjuring power should be used for gadgets, but I don't think that it adequately covers the idea of having a bag of tricks to pull from.

Taking a cue from such games as Mutants and Masterminds, I'm thinking of making a Gadgeteering power which is just a pool of power points.

Maybe 2pts per 1 power pool point, up to a Gadgeteer level of 10. Built in is the Variable Enhancement and Gadget Limitation.

With these points, a hero can come up with variable power items on the spot, ranging from a EMP device, a computer hacking tool, etc. -- taking one action to produce the device.

Thoughts?

Conjuring let's you make anything one at a time.

Mastery (machines) would let you affect the world of machines AND with a power stunt of 1 hero point you can duplicate another power at a time.

The Gadgeteering advantage is similar to Grimoire which lets you effectively rebuild your character every time you have access to your lab or magic book.

Where the game is at right now is building Gadgeteers with their "normal" equipment and allowing them to tweak on the run (with Conjuring or Mastery) or completely rebuild when the characters have downtime (using Gadgeteering). This approach is also more condusive to play, because it readies the Gadgeteer player for play at the start and allows the flexibility to completely retool.

The alternative is that the Gadgeteer character is effectively a blank sheet of paper each time. Which takes a lot of time.

Another alternative is a new game mechanic allows the Gadgeteer to effectively use many more points than if they had just built their Gadgets as powers, which isn't exactly fair to peer players.

What you are suggesting sounds like the Copycat rules. Take a look at it if I haven't persuaded you toward the current approach.

If you need help building a Gadgeteer just ask the Forum. We love creating characters! Welcome to BASH.

The newest printing also introduces "Power Tricks" and rules for inventions under the Gadgeteer Advantage that you will find more to your liking I think. Stay tuned for updated pdfs.
