World-Class

Here is something I modified from the Sci-Fi rules. In there it is called Exemplary. I was using the old Marvel Saga rules for examples below. I'd be interested to hear other examples as well. What do you think of the power itself? Too powerful? Not cost enough?

World Class (2 or 5 pts)

You are "the best of the best" with the use of a certain weapon or skill specialty. Every issue, you get one free Hero die that can be spent on a roll involved in using this weapon or skill specialty.

As a 1 pt. enhancement, you can be a master at an entire weapon group (HTH or ranged), or an entire skill group (Including each of it's specialties).

For 5 points, it becomes even broader, encompassing an an entire ability (brawn, Agility, or Mind) and you can use your extra Hero die for anything related to using that ability. This simulates heroes who are " The Strongest One There Is!, " The Fastest Man Alive", or "The Smartest Man On the Planet"

2 pt example
Captain America (Leadership, Shields)
Bruce Banner (Radiology)
Hawkeye (Archery)
Tony Stark (Weapons Systems)
Reed Richards (Spacecraft)
Hank Pym (Ant Etymology, Sub-Atomic physics)
Thor (Hammers)
Bullseye (Throwing)

3 pt (broad) examples
Nick Fury (Military)
Wolverine (Brawling)
Batman (Investigation)

5 point Examples
Hulk (Brawn)
Flash (Agility)
Ozymandias (Mind)

This looks pretty cool. When using this ability, would it work with a power designed to emulate a weapon you might be best at? Your 2 pt example of Captain America would imply that it does, but the description doesn't specify working with powers or not

Yeah, it could work with weapons. I used the wording from Weapon Technique in the beginning.
You are "the best of the best" with the use of a certain weapon or skill specialty.
Hawkeye / Green Arrow could have it with bows
Cap with Shields
Bullseye with thrown weapons
etc.

Interesting...
I'll toss out some things to consider and think about.

What can that "free Hero Die" do? Can you split it up into Hero Points? Can you use it for other things (not related to your World Class ability) or is it specific like Leadership's free extra HD?

What about getting the HD back if you succeed in what you're best at? As the promise showing that you ARE the best, so you can then do it again in the Issue.

I get that your list is for examples, but do you really think that ALL of those characters WOULD have this power? It seems like a big extra expense for meager return. It might not be enough of an incentive... maybe with my suggestion for getting the HD returned it would? I could see if it were more like that characters like BULLSEYE would have it (he IS the best at throwing), BATMAN would have it (he IS the world's greatest detective), HULK would have it (he IS the strongest one there is).

Another thought... How about, If the character is beaten at this thing he is the greatest at he LOSES the HD and can't use the ability again until he beats the opponent or task that beat him...?

I would also say it should note working only with other Intense Training powers (like I think Weapon Technique does)...

Any other thoughts, this is a neat idea.

I think it would apply apply to the World Class ability. Say someone like Sherlock Holmes has World Class Investigation. So he could use it for: Analysis, Finding Clues, Questioning, Gut

He could automatically succeed on any skill checks with them.
Maybe power stunt something detective related. Like Scan, or Sense X, etc.

With World Class Weapons you could do all sort of power stunts, add an extra die to a roll, reactively use it , etc. It would really be up to the GM as to what is and isn't allowed.
What about getting the HD back if you succeed in what you're best at? As the promise showing that you ARE the best, so you can then do it again in the Issue.
I used how it was worded in the Sci-Fi book. Gaining it back might be an option.

I was using the writeups in the old TSR Marvel Saga edition for Master Class abilities. It was a term that was used in there, and all the Marvel characters listed with it, are the ones I posted (except for Wolverine..I threw him in, because he always says " I'm the best there is , at what I do"
Another thought... How about, If the character is beaten at this thing he is the greatest at he LOSES the HD and can't use the ability again until he beats the opponent or task that beat him...?
That is an interesting thought. I also thought about saying that only one character in a specific campaign world could have the World Class ability. There can't be two "Fastest Men Alive"
I would also say it should note working only with other Intense Training powers (like I think Weapon Technique does)...
I thought about that, but it can do more, since it can be applied to whole ability scores at higher levels, as well as skills.

Here is a simplified version: (plus, I am thinking of making it an Advantage, rather than a Power.

WORLD-CLASS
You are "the best there is " in some activity or area of expertise. Every issue, you get one free Hero die that can be spent on a roll involved with this exemplary ability. As long as it relates to what you are the Best at, you can use your extra Hero die for anything—whether punching someone into outer space (The Strongest One there is), recalling an ancient spell in the nick of time (Master of the Mystic Arts), or using your legendary skills of deduction to figure out a deadly riddle (World's Greatest Detective)

Examples:
Batman-"World's Greatest Detective"
Dr Strange- "Master of the Mystic Arts"
Shang-Chi"Master of Kung-Fu"
Hulk- "The Strongest One there is"
The Flash-"Fastest Man Alive"
Ozymandias-"The Smartest Man on the Planet"
Captain America-"Pinnacle of Human Perfection"
Wolverine-"I'm the Best there is at what I do..and what I do isn't very nice"
Captain Marvel-"World's Mightiest Mortal"
Green Arrow-"Ace Archer"

Hey Dragonfly,

Glad you liked it . Which version are you going to use?
I think the 2nd one is my favorite so far.

Neat idea. How about, instead of loosing the Hero Die, the character gains a Setback?
