Hitting an inanimate object?

I may have missed finding this if it's in the rules (if so where is it, please?)....

Two questions.

#1. How do you hit (melee or range) a target that is an inanimate object. Is it a simple roll to hit and a Difficulty chosen by the Narrator? What would the Diff be?

#2. If an object is a "gadget" NOT held by a character - if the gadget were dropped on the ground or if the gadget were wrapped around the opponent (like a Gadget Limitation on Immobilization = a Lasso).... NOT in the hands of or controlled by a character, how would you hit the object/gadget? Or is the Gadget Limitation on a power not subject to be "hit" or is it based on the power's level? Or Is it a simple roll to hit and a Difficulty chosen by the Narrator? What would the Diff be?

thanks!

I think p15 3rd paragraph sort of covers this. "In situations where the character is not in conflict with another, but is still trying to use a skill or ability that is not certain of success..."

For me, trying to make a melee attack against an inanimate object doesn't qualify; I'd have the player roll their damage and be done with it. (edit: because punching an inanimate object should be certain of success)

A ranged attack is a bit different and is wide open to interpretation as to how difficult it would be. I figure the difficulty would depend on the size of the object and hindering environmental factots (ie its raining or people are shooting at the character).

Got it in one, Dustland.

Personally for attacking at range, I would have it be Difficulty 0 if the object is really big, and you are really close (literally the broadside of a barn).

This is not a rule- just a suggestion- how I would do it:

10 if the object is man-sized
20 if the object is small
30 if it is tiny
+10 if the target is beyond Mid range
+20 if it is extreme range

If it is a melee attack, the difficulty is 0. Shooting a flashlight on the ground from 30 feet away isn't a sure thing. Stomping on one from 3 feet away is.
