Powers with Burst/Area etc and adding Variable Enchancement

One of my only criticisms with BASH! (and it's minor, BASH! is in my all time top 5) is that sometimes I wish there was a little more in the way of examples, especially when it comes to building powers.*

So firstly I am going to ask - is there anywhere, forum, BAM or somewhere else that can act as a guide to the slow among us of how best to construct a good super hero? (with particular attention to what you can do with certain enchancements and things like "special attack" - someone once made me an awesome Gambit, but I forget where that was).

Secondly, and more specifically:

If I add Variable to something like Immobilization 5 this will allow me to swap the amounts around I know - however can I buy amounts of area/range etc on top of this which is not affected by variable.

For example: if I want to have a 50 in a difficultly to escape that's not going to allow for much range, even with variable as an enhancement. Could I then buy a range on top of this which isn't affected by variable and can only be used to add range if required.

Hope that makes sense.

*mainly because I am pretty certain from going through pregen characters that anything can be created with this system (well maybe not Marvel's Darwin...), but I sometimes just don't "see" it until the finished product is made. i.e I'm better at working the system backwards than forwards, not the best thing for a Narrator!

I'm having real difficulty for example with creating a telephathic link power between two characters who can speak to one another telepathically at any distance but can't read one anothers thoughts without the other letting them/extreme effort.[/i]

I'm not 100% sure, but I'm almost positive that BASHMAN confirmed that you can spend points on a set Range on top of a Variable effect, even though this goes beyond the power's normal limit.

Ex: Special Attack 5 Variable, Mid-Range: 7 points. If this is right, the rule is a little unclear as to whether you can use the Variable to further increase Range. I would probably rule that you cannot.
