Weapon Gadget

I am thinking about building a character with some kind of Super-Weapon. I am not quite sure how the rules are on this.

The power I would use is - unsurprising - Special Attack. But:

would I totally disregard the usual properties of the weapon in question and thus build it as a typical Special attack?
OR
would I take the weapon stats as the basis for calculating the power?

Let me give an example where I have a character with Brawn 3 and Agility 3 and put 3 points into the Special attack Power to create a one-handed-sword (disregarding the one point cost reduction for the gadget-limitation). Of the three points I use one to increase the "to hit" and two to increase damage.

Would the weapon have to hit x4 and amage x5 or to hit x4 and damage x4 +10?

If you build a weapon as a power, you ignore the weapon properties completely. You could make a "sword" that gives +3DM +0 To Hit, while someone else might make a sword that gives +2DM in +1 to hit, etc. You don't get to add a result bonus from Brawn, though.

Now what you *Could* do for that same character w/ Brawn 3 Agility 3 is give him:

Weapon Technique 2 (+1 Hit, +1DM w/ Swords) 2pts
So then his 1 handed sword would do x4 Hit, x3+15 Dmg.
If you add attack weak point to this character, you may find that that x3+15 can actually do some damage to a lot of much bigger bad guys (x6+30)! I had a friend build a ninja whose weapons were all "normal" weapons- but his skill (he had Weapon Technique 2 [Variable; All Weapons]) made it possible for him to take the head off a giant robot.

If you want to give him an "anime katana" you could even spend 1pt for a special Katana that has "extra effect vs. inanimate objects" or "Extra effect vs. Armor" for instance.

To pick up the last point you wrote: would the extra damage vs. leave the weapon a weapon with the usual stats for that weapon then?

The way you explain it there is the possibility that a 1 or 2 point Special-Attack-Weapon can be weaker than the mundane counterpart. Although being a gedget would reduce the point-cost.

I assume if you create a geadget-weapon the type of damage it does depends on the kind of special attack (so an energy sword would make energy damage)!?

Would it be legitimate to give a weapon a damage Aura: e.g. creating a common-stat-sword of electricity with a gadget-aura-of-electricity? And could such a weapon be combined with intense training powers?

Yes. See the "Special Equipment" sidebar in the section on weapons.

Well, yeah. A person with natural claws (+1DM) will not do as much damage as a guy with a sword unless he also has super strength. However, mundane weapons are usually pretty limited unless you add powers such as Weapon Technique to make them better. At which point, you aren't saving points vs. special attack. It's really more a matter of style.

Yes- and you should specify what kind of energy it is (like "laser" is different from "electricity" for instance).

Are you saying the sword electrocutes anyone who touches it? That would count as a gadget, not an ordinary sword. If however, you want an "energy sword" that happens to be electrical in nature, that is easily made. Just take a normal sword, and give it +1DM (again, see "Energy Weapons" in the equipment section). You would be able to use it with intense training powers, though.

Thank you again for the clarification.

Concerning the damage aura you got my point exactly. An aura does damage to anybody a character touches. So if he punched somebody the person hit should take also damage from the punch and also damage from the aura (which would be soaked separately). Could that character then have the anhancement (or limitation) that the aura also/only covers melee weapons used by them or even only one specific melee weapon? And would that character then do melee damage as usual with the weapon plus the damage from the damage aura?

I would say yes. Basically the weapon counts as a piece of special equipment (meaning you have to pay 1pt for it to have an enhancement: Special Effect: Counts as part of your own body for Damage Aura)
