Same Source

Working n a few villains for my Gotham game, I keep encountering characters who have a number of abilities that all stem from a single gadget.

For example Mr. Freeze, to me he should have special attack, immobilize, force field, and slow all from his Cold Gun, and he can certainly use all of these abilities independent of one another with the effects of one not ending because he uses another so multipower is clearly out. attaching each of them to an easily taken gadget works but is ugly on the sheet and doesn't really demonstrate that if he loses one he loses all of them. So I'm thinking one Gadget easily taken and the rest same source.

Thoughts, ideas, criticisms?

Makes sense to me. It's the same cost as just making them all Gadgets, and is in fact a bit worse (ie, more of a disadvantage) since they can all be lost by a single disarm.

I would say that Immobilize, Slow and Special Attack could all be in a multipower without problems. We know from this thread that even on-going effects that you hit others with and then they make resistance rolls to break free are fine in multipowers. Force Fields, however, would need to be outside it.

One thing I've done with characters who "immobilize" someone by encasing them in ice (or earth, or whatever) is to buy it as Force Field instead (maybe FF limited to attack only if that is appropriate to the concept). It can keep the target from moving, but has a different "feel" than the actual Immobilize power. It can be broken by using a flame power, for example, where the normal Immobilize cannot. And the people outside the effect can't just beat on the affected target since the ice/earth/whatever blocks attacks in both directions. Just a thought, I know not everyone will like that approach.

I just hadn't considered that, I linked the Immobilize to Force Field.

That's what Same Source was created for - when the Webshooters you use to swing from building to building are also your primary weapon for webbing up badguys.

yes but easily taken is not listed as one of the limitations that can qualify for same source.

Oh, I just used "Ammo" as an example. Easily taken is fine too. Actually any limitation would be fair to have "Same Source" with, IMO.

So what's the difference between Same Sorce and Linked? How would you decide which to use?

Can they only be used simultaneously? That is LINKED.

Can they be used separately from one another? That is Same Source.

Right now it looks like Same Source cannot be applied to a Gadget.

Is there an equivalent of for a Gadget?

For example, I have a Spear that is a Special Attack but also fires a beam of energy. Can I apply Same Source to both Special Attacks?

Or is this simplly Multi-Power?

thanks!

I'd think that was a multipower, where you are doing just a melee Special Attack as one power, and a ranged energy blast Special Attack as the other.
