Question about the Blaster in UE, p. 109

Hi, all! I'm new to BASH and am planning on changing over my Champions campaign for my kids and some RL friends to BASH for simplicity purposes. Wish me luck!

I have a question about the Blaster's Variable Energy Blast (Special Attack 5) on p. 109 of Ultimate Edition. I see that some of the variations of her power (Range, Area, Damage, and To Hit) equal 11 pts (Standard Blast: Mid Range (2 pts), x4 Hit (4 pts), x5 Damage (5 pts) = 11 pts; Short Blast: Close Range (1 pt), x6 Damage (6 pts), x4 Hit (4 pts) = 11 pts., etc.) but some only equal 9 pts (Close Range (1 pt), Small Burst (1 pt), x7 Damage (7 pts); or Medium Burst (2 pts), x7 Damage (7 pts)). The power is Special Attack 5 (5 pts) and the Variable Enhancement (1 pt) = 6 pts. I get that Variable lets you change up the range, area, to hit, etc. My question is how was the math figured? Where did the extra pts. come from?

Some of the to Hit and Damage multipliers are based on Agility and Mind respectively.

Also is this the first or second printng (black & white or color)?

It's the color version. Could you please breakdown the modifiers for me? I'm trying to work the math backwards.

I'm still having problems with the math on this. The Blaster has Mind 2 and Boost 2: Mind (for using Energy Blasts), so that gives her a base x4 Damage. Special Attack 5 lets her rearrange the 5 pts between To Hit or Damage; Variable lets her also mix around the 5 pts in Special Attack for Range and Area. That's not IN ADDITION to To Hit and Damage, is it, because the math still doesn't work.

I'm not clear where the extra 2 pts are coming from if you get 4 pts from Mind 2 and Boost 2: Mind, and 5 from Special Attack. What am I missing?

Variable DOES also allow her to adjust to hit and damage.

It says it lets you change levels of the power for Area and Range, and also lets you decide what you do with each level in the power.

So if you have Special Attack 5 [Variable] it lets you put 2 levels in to Hit, 3 levels in damage, or 1 Level in damage with a long range, small burst. Or you can do 3 levels in damage in a Medium burst, etc.

Yes, I understand that. Where are the extra 2 pts coming from on five of her powers (two of her powers equal 9 pts, so that works out)? What am I missing?

I looked at her build and counted every one of her attacks. All of them added up to 5 points.

Your "To Hit" bonus is equal to Your Agility for 0 points. On top of that, you can use levels to increase the multiplier. So if you have Agility 2, an attack with x2 to hit costs 0 extra, x3 to hit costs 1 extra, etc.

If you have a base of x4 damage from Mind and Boost, an attack doing x4 dmg costs 0 extra, x5 dmg costs 1 extra, etc.

Here it is all broken down for that build:

With A2 M2, Boost 2 M for Dmg, this works out to:

Standard Blast: Mid Range (2pts), x4 Hit (2pts), x5 Dmg (1pt)
Short Blast: Close Range (1pt) x6 Dmg (2 pts) x4 Hit(2 pts)
Long Blast: Long Range (3pts), x5 Dmg (1pt), x3 Hit (1pt)
Wide Angle: Close Range (1pt), Small Burst (1pt), x7 dmg (3pts)
Dodge This: x5 Hit (3pts), x6 Dmg (2pts)
Haymaker: x2 Hit (0 pts) x9 Dmg (5pts)
Spin-Blast: Medium Burst (2pts), x7 Dmg (3pts)

Okay, I wasn't counting the 2 points for her base Agility score. This breakdown answers my questions; thanks for the patient response! :D

Our first session went BASHtastically. Both adult players loved the BASH system compared to Champions; we all found it quicker and smoother. The dice rolls ran the gamut as well, from "That didn't even leave a mark" to "OMG, she totally incinerated that ninja!" Lots of fun had by all, and now I'm creating characters for the next game. :D
