Area Attacks: 3 Questions?

I have three questions about "AREA" attacks. The types of area are: Burst, Line, Arc, Cone, Ricochet.

QUESTION #1
The rules notes SPECIFICALLY in their descriptions that the BURST & CONE attacks do not roll to hit targets, to avoid the target may roll a Defense or Athletics/Acrobatics check.
RICOCHET explains that you need to roll an Attack to hit as normal.
However...
LINE & ARC don't say either.
Do Lines & Arcs need to roll an Attack to hit as normal Ranged Attacks (using Agility)?
OR
Do they work like Bursts & Cones not needing a roll to hit targets, to avoid the target may roll a Defense or Athletics/Acrobatics check?

QUESTION #2
The rules for CONES notes:
Targets at the farthest edge of the "BURST" away from the user get a +10 Result bonus to their roll to defend against the effect, as this is where the effect is weakest.

Does this also mean that Bursts, Lines, Arcs ALSO gain the +10 Result Bonus for the targets farthest away?

QUESTION #3
Rules for "MENTAL" Area attack/power note:
If the power is something Mental, or something that cannot be divided, such as Daze or Immobilization, then the attacker makes a single attack roll, and all the targets (or each group of minions) make their own separate defense roll against it.

Is this Attack Roll a "MENTAL" Attack roll (Mind check)?
&
Is this Defense Roll a "MENTAL DEFENSE" roll?

THANKS!

1. You roll to hit with lines and arcs.

2. Only comes.

3. The individual power should say, but in general you are correct.

What about a burst with range? It feels like there should be a to-hit roll, but if so, what do roll to hit a target square? (and what happens if you "miss"?)

No to hit roll is needed. Close only counts in Horse-shoes and hand grenades. This being equivalent to the latter case, no roll to hit is needed. Instead, people caught in the blast radius roll Defense or Athletics/Acrobatics to reduce damage.

If you want to ADD that requirement as an option, I'd say the target number to hit with an explosive attack is 10 to put it in the exact square you want it to be in. If it misses, have it move 1d6 minus 1d6 squares vertically and 1d6 minus 1d6 squares horizontally from the target square.

So if you rolled and got -3 and 4, the explosion would instead go off 3 squares below (closer to the attacker) and 4 squares to the right.

Thanks for the clarification. Actually I'm happy keeping it simple, except maybe if a long range/small burst is involved. If Hawkeye wants to shoot an explosive arrow a country mile and have it explode exactly where he aims it, he might have to roll for that. :)

When my group first started playing, we misinterpreted things and made all area effects require no to hit and have targets evade. Upon realizing the error of our ways, we decided not to change things. It keeps things simple and has not adversely affected things.

Not saying that it should be changed officially. Just thought I would point out that it works in more than one way, which is one of the signs of a solid rule set, IMHO.

Still really enjoying BASH! So much so that I started a fantasy campaign a while back using the Supers rules. It is rockin' along nicely.
