BASH at MisCon 24

I start my first BASH con game in one hour... This is going to be the WWII supers game I talked about before. I've decided to drop the supers into the Battle of Britain and will be going for the Shock and Awe style game. The British RAF will be fighting a losing battle when the American heroes enter the fray, but the appearance of these unknown supers fighting the monsters will motivate the soldiers to push even harder. The main encounter will be centered around a German Ubermensch-Demon that will take all the heroes working together while the British RAF fight back against the * horde.

What I decided to do for a dynamic feel of mass combat was to pick a hero every two or three pages to roll against me, the winner of the roll advancing in the battle in their favor. This will hopefully result in a wide range of results, everything from a titanic victory for one side or the other down to a narrow margin of success.

Each player today will get a copy of the book and I'm hoping that they enjoy the system enough to keep playing afterward. To add a little flavor to the game I purchased 24 Chessex dice that the players will be using: one red d6, one blue d6, both with white pips.

Here goes nothing... :)

The game went well and everyone had a good time. My big bad guy at the very end was pasted in one shot by the hero with the lowest build cost, and he got a resounding cheer for that one.

He did 140 points of damage. The big bad had a x8 soak and I rolled a total of FIVE with an exploding die. I didn't give him any o-* backups or anything, figuring that the x8 soak would be plenty...

Nope. :D

That has happened to me a couple of times too... it's funny when the players take out the big bad in one shot ;)

I just got back from the con and several of the players came up to me after the game to let me know how much fun they had. That made me feel * good.

The heroes we had were...

Forklift - A brick, only slightly modified from the one in the book.

"Stella" - A female mentalist who used mind control and TK f'ing brilliantly and also doubled as the communication system for the team (through Telepathy).

Stretch - My take on a toned-down Mr. Fantastic metamorph.

Speed Demon - A speedster.

Lt. USA - A slightly modified "Patriotic Shield Leader" who swapped out his shield for something truly American: A Louisville Slugger. I gave him Flight 3 to raise his cost a little bit and give the group another flier.

The dynamic mechanic went well, with the players totally turning the tide of battle and giving the RAF a much needed respite from the * onslaught. One of the shining moments was when Forklift used his super leap to grapple a German plane, then crushed it and kept the propeller for himself. Shortly after, they ran into * infantry, which were animated dead, and Forklift used the plane propeller as a projectile... He rolled amazingly well and it was decided that he cut down a line of the undead soldiers before they could fully get into formation. Seeing how effective that was, Stretch used his Body Weaponry ability to make himself into a propeller and shouted "Do it again!" And Forklift did.

Once the introductory battle was resolved the heroes were briefed on the situation and decided to take the fight to the *'s who were setting up artillery cannons on the opposite side of the channel. The intelligence the British had was spotty, not understanding why the *'s were setting the artillery so far away, so they didn't see it as a true threat... but the heroes knew something was up.

They were taken across the channel and Speed Demon immediately started scouting. He found the * encampment and returned to the group to let them know what was found. The *'s had five very large cannons resembling giant mortar launchers pointed toward Great Britain from France's side of the channel. He also saw a large platform, circular and 100' across, with a massive figure standing in the middle. At five points around the figure there were smaller (human) sorcerers performing some kind of ritual. The platform was mounted on monstrous arms (read: arms of a monster) that stood 50' off the ground. Obviously, this guy was who they needed to focus on.

There was a horde of * soldiers, all undead, and several commanding officers who, the players determined, acted as taskmasters, guiding the undead toward whatever goal. When I said that the mentalist was f'ing brilliant, I meant it.

Chaos ensued, Speed Demon managed to sabotage all five hellfire cannons in three pages, two pages before they would have fired after they started charging. He did so by damaging the "turbine" that was charging up the arcane energy in the weapons and causing them to explode, taking out a massive amount of * soldiers. Forklift made his way onto the platform and performed a shockwave that blew two of the casters off the disk. At this point the restraining ritual was broken and the monster started to come to life. It was a huge being made of metal and bone, a sort of reinforced flesh golem that stood 20' tall, and its eyes burned with hate.

I gave everyone one action before he fully came free of the restraining spell, not activating any of the powers that I gave it until then (he had a bunch of Gradual powers), thinking it would allow them to get into position for the big fight.

It was at this point that Lt. USA flew like a star-spangled bullet at the monster's head and swung his bat for all he was worth... dealing 140 points of damage with a single strike. The monster fell, the disk toppled and Lt. USA floated in the sky with his bat pointing out of the park...

As an aside, I was using two red d6's, one with black numbers and one with white numbers, for my German dice. I rolled for * the entire game while my players were exploding left and right. That's the last time I wear my Captain America shirt when running that one-shot. ;)

My only problem with the game was with one of the players, everything else was awesome. The game was a changing experience.

I'm honestly just glad you guys had fun. That was by far one of the most intimidating games for me to run and I'm glad it all worked out.
