TEAM BUILDING

So as I am working on creating a super team of npcs, its seems that getting the mix right is hard. Its not just about the right mix of archetypes, but also the personalities of the supers - creating a believable group of characters who would stay together. And determining the leader, if neccessary.
i started with rough ideas for each character, but when i began to build each, I found that they didnt quiet work. For example, in my british team, i had Albion, a low rate champion of justice type, and a supersoldier brick, John Bull. The trick i found was to make these two characters work together. John Bull has the potential to be a great leader because he has military training, while Albion has been set up as the teams natural leader. They are also strong types, so i was keen to make them feel different. I tinkered with the stats etc, but in the end it came down to personality. Originally i had them both as alpha male types, and that wasnt going to end well.
My solution was to make John Bull a military man, but not quite intelligent enough for officer material - more of a grunt. I also made him a little older (in his thirties) and with responsibilities for a child, so he would take more of a parental role in the team, as a protector, but not leading from the front.
Albion, on the other hand I made younger (in his 20s), and a little more brash. Due to his iconic nature, he is the leader for the team, but lacks the maturity of John Bull.
Do you have similiar problems building npc teams, and any solutions to share?
