When a tavern is not enough

In the past I have often made the initial team-up occur by being involved in a shared attempt to stop a crime, or by having a common purpose as to why the PCs are assembled by an individual or organization to accomplish some task.

What is the most intersting or most common way in which you have gotten the PCs together or if you are a player mostly, which way(s) has your GM used to get you and your team members together?

I used to worry about that, but it's always a pain.

It's very possible for you to ask your players to already have a backstory together.
"You guys have already met and formed a team. Let's figure out how."
