Ultimate Edition has the following not in the Original Edition:
Hero Points and Setbacks
Hero Dice
4 Tiers of play (Mystery Men, Street Level, World Class, and Cosmic)
Rules to accommodate teams of characters with diverse levels of power (Thundergods & Shield Slingers fight side-by side)
Random adventure generator
Subgenres of Comics, so you can run Pulp, Golden, Silver, Bronze, Iron Ages as well as Fantasy, Sci-Fi, and Cosmic supers campaigns.
Dozens of pre-made character archetype templates that should look instantly familiar to you. You can easily adapt them to your campaign with a few minor adjustments (with recommendations on how to do so).
Much more monsters and vehicles.
More advantages & disads,
You can build your own Headquarters now
There are many more things that are new and different, but I think this list is a good start.

Thanks for the link and the information on UE! Yes, it sounds intriguing, especial the power levels and archetypes, I felt those were what the Basic version needed the most. Are Setbacks like disadvantages, or cumulative penalties for not playing in character?
(I must be honest: I need to do some adjustments with my debit card account, otherwise I probably would have ordered UE already... but it will be done soon. I hope!)

Setbacks are like negative Hero Points. If it's a 40 point campaign, and you make a 25 point character, you get 15 Hero Points to fudge dice rolls and otherwise nudge the plot, thus giving the lower powered characters a bit of an edge.Sijo wrote:Thanks for the link and the information on UE! Contrariwise, if you have a 25 point game, and make a 40 point character, you have 15 points of Setbacks that the GM is required to use to * you over.

Sure. The key here is they don't all have to be *exactly* 25 points. If somebody is 27 and another person is 22 points, that will still work without anybody feeling they "wasted" points.Sijo wrote:Hmm. Interesting. I can see how that can both balance the player characters AND fit into the genre (non-powered heroes do seem to have more luck that powered ones.) I would prefer to just have all characters start at the same point level, but that's something to work out with the players.

Another method is, (and I think that Bashman himself said he's done this), is to have everyone make their characters, with as many points as they think they need to do their concept, then set the campaign level after the fact to match or exceed the highest one. So if the highest character is 35 points, then the GM can decide that the campaign level 35 or 40, and everyone gets the appropriate level of Hero Points.

Re: Welcome!!
Hi Chris
I'm just about to start a VTT H+I campaign (fingers' crossed!).
Where's the best place to talk all things swashed and buckled?
I'm not a super fan of public Facebook groups, so looking for somewhere less 'public square'!

I've got a Mastodon account at dice.camp: https://dice.camp/@BasicActionGames and I'm also pretty active on RPG.net, too. I've been thinking of making a Discord server as well, if that would be more interesting to you. If I do make one, I'll likely announce it here and a few other places.TheConvenientSkill wrote: ↑Thu Dec 29, 2022 7:47 am Hi Chris
