Problems buying BASH products

Post by Sijo »

OK, a little background on this first:

For years, I've used DrivethruRPG.com to buy book downloads, including your products. A few weeks ago though, I was notified (by them) that they had been hacked and there was a risk our credit card data could be compromised (like 50%.) While they assured that measures were being taken about it, they also advised recent clients to change their cards. Which I promptly did.

Recently, I went to Drivethru to buy another BASH product (The ADEL file) and attempted to pay using my new Paypal account. But I got a "site blocked" warning from the Avira App on my Chrome Browser because of 'suspicions of the site being used for phishing'. I'm not clear, however, if it was referring to Drivethru or Paypal.

So I tried again using my Firefox browser. This one I had a different app installed on. I still got a warning, but only that is was 'an insecure connection'. I went ahead and bought the book anyway, with no ill effects so far.

Then tonight I bought another book (Amazing Powers vol. 4) the same way. Once again, same blocking/warning. I ignored it and bought it.

Still, I'd like to hear what you think. Do you think Drivethru is still trustworthy? Or is Paypal the problem? Or are the Apps being overprotective?

I've been using my VISA debit-enhanced bank card. After the notice, I notified my bank and went through the procedure to switch my card for a new one. I haven't had any problems since so I figure that my bank, and VISA, are alright with RPGNow and DriveThruRPG.

Drivethru and Rpgnow are fine; but the site was hacked several months back. That might be the reason the site was flagged, but they have dealt with the problem and assured their customers the site is safe once again. However, they did send an email a few months ago recommending people to have a new credit card issued (for whichever one they had on file withthe site).

Update: I checked both DrivethruRPG.com and RPGnow.com and I got no warnings from them. I then tried to log onto Paypal with both my Chrome (with has the Avira add-on) and Firefox (which has SafeSearch.) Again, Avira blocked me but SafeSearch didn't even give me a warning this time. So I guess it's just Avira that doesn't trust Paypal?

So, should I continue to use Paypal, or go back to using my (new) debit card?

I'm no expert, but I do trust RPGNow with my bank card (enhanced with VISA debit).

I use paypal all the time for those sites, and no issues for years. I never use a cc for Drivethru/RPGNow, so when it got hacked, it didnt affect me.

I think the issue has to be Avira
