New Rule: Alterations
An Alteration is a type of Enhancement that is also inherently limiting, making it have a value of 0 points when added to a Power. The purpose of an Alteration is to adjust a power in a way that doesn't make it more or less powerful; merely different. Generally an Alteration is when an Enhancement would allow a power to do something different, and a limitation would prevent it from being used in any other way. For instance: Affects Machines Only Alteration would allow a power (like Healing) to affect machines even if normally unable to do so, but would also prevent it from being used on a living being. This could already be accomplished by the Affects Unliving Enhancement coupled with the Only Affects Unliving Limitation, which also cancel each other. However because a power's cost can only be reduced by a Limitation once, this might discourage adding an additional Limitation that truly impacts the power. Using Alterations allows you to have the power customized the way you want, including a real Limitation.
An Alteration can also be something that is both beneficial and limiting in its own right, depending on the situation. A power that cannot affect living targets for example can be beneficial when innocent bystanders are surrounded by killer robots, however it is useless when being attacked by a living, breathing super villain.
To differentiate an Alteration from Enhancements and Limitations in a power's write-up, use {squiggly brackets}. The Narrator should be the final judge if something is an Enhancement, Limitation, or Alteration, but here are some example Alterations that can be made:
• Affects Animals Only (0 Pts): A power with this Alteration can affect animals, even those with the Non-Sentient Enhancement, however it can only affect animals.
• Affects Incorporeal Only (0 Pts): A power with this Alteration can affect creatures with Ghost Form or Phasing, however, it can only affect such beings.
• Affects Machines Only (0 Pts): A power with this Alteration can affect machines even if ordinarily unable to do so, however it can only affect machines.
• Affects Plants Only (0 Pts): A power with this Alteration can affect plants, even those with the Non-Sentient Enhancement, however it can only affect plants.
• Affects Undead Only (0 Pts): A power with this Alteration can affect undead, even if ordinarily unable to do so, however it can only affect undead.
• No Effect on Living (0 Pts): A power with this Alteration will not affect living targets, but will affect those with the Unliving Advantage and inanimate objects.
