Boost,
the helmet design is partially based on The Rocketeer, but was also influenced by the headgear worn by Captain Gravity, a post-modern golden age hero. The goggles are actually not part of the helmet, which I thought was a nice touch.
All the rocket men types in the serials tended to wear normal clothes most of the time, so I wanted a more normal look with this guy. His pants are kind of military like (or so Kris told me), and he's wearing a flight jacket from the time period (since he is also a pilot).
Ok, just got the images for The Wraith III and Velocity Jane!
I haven't come up with the background for Wraith, so I'll edit this later when I do:
Velocity Jane: Jane Abernathy was the second woman to ever race in the Indy 500. Her love of racing drove her to test an experimental fuel substitute that would allow vehicles to move faster while using less gas. * agents sabotaged her vehicle, causing it to crash. Covered in the experimental liquid, her dormant genes activated her super speed abilities. No longer was she Jane Abernathy; now she was Velocity Jane, mistress of Speed!
I just have to state that I think Velocity Jane is the best pic Kris has done for me so far. I love the after image effect! I can't wait to run this on Saturday!
Hey, like these 2 new additions, especially Velocity Jane. Gotta' love the aviator cap/glasses and scarf! Did they have those kind of athletic shoes in that era though? Pah! No matter! Perhaps they were invented by benevolent mad scientist!

I didn't even look at the shoes, so I hadn't noticed! Ironically enough, there are a few scientist types helping the good guys. Sky Marshal's jet pack and rocket ship were designed by Doctor Z, who has a good friend named Flash
Mr. Flexible is related to another scientist, who was inspired by the old Disney movie "The Absent Minded Professor". So one of them could have designed her shoes.
As for the headgear, it's actually not an aviator cap. Back then, racing helmets were also made that way, and I found an image of one for Kris to use as a reference. They do look similar though!
Thanks Mr. Jupiter. I'm pretty excited about this game Saturday. I should have the Wyatt Earp (Sky Marshal's rocket) later this morning, so be on the lookout for that one too
Kris just started sending in the character images for my "Plague of Darkness" cosmic one shot that I am running this Sunday for Recess. I just uploaded them to Photo Bucket, and am now sharing them here and on NerdNYC.
First up is Major Meteor, a hero from the 1950's who left earth, and has wandered through space ever since:
Next, we have S'Lar, ION Guardsman from the planet S'avok. I have to say, this one is a thing of beauty:
As soon as I get them all in, I'll post the three members of the Cosmic Legion that will be characters in the game. Should be later today, but I'm sure these 2 new pieces will hold you over until then
Very nice! I really like them both, but I have to agree that S'Lar in an intriguing take and I can imagine some great visual "panels" with him using the ION Fist on his tail.

That's what I thought myself when i first got the idea for the character.
Also, Cu Morrig has done a great image of the planet sized being that is one of the opponents the players will face. I was really impressed with how it came out
Finally got the remaining images from Kris for the one shot.
The following 3 characters are a Triad in the Cosmic Legion, the elite military unit of the Rho'van Confederation.
First up is Star Blade. A native of Rho'van, she wields the Star Blade, an artifact of great power:
Her second is Centurion D'anar, from Denovia IV. 1% of his people develop super powers, and use them for the good of both Denovia IV and the Confederation. His abilities are in the vein of Superman's physical and heightened sensory powers:
The final member of the Triad is Pulsar #17. Pulsar's race were genetically engineered to serve the Confederation. Their bodies store energy, and are able to discharge it in various ways, making them very powerful weapons:
Glad you liked them! I think Kris and I are starting to get more in synch as I commission more art from him. I think the stuff he does for me gets better over time. I really feel these surpass the Golden Age heroes he did for me.
Also, Cu Morrig did 2 awesome images for me for this one shot. I had to give him props, cause he did one in about 5 days for me.
Yeah... wow. I'm both jealous and excited at the same time! hehe.
Mostly though... EXCITED that this is happening for BASH! games.
Thoughts/Questions.
- what are Kris' rates and timeline for characters like these?
- do you have an example of how you ask for art? I'm interested in how you do the art direction. What's your creation/direction and what's the artist's
- the style is VERY similar to the style of artist I've worked with in the past on supers projects (my HERO HOOKS book I did for M&M). I love the style. THIS THIS THIS... should BE the style for all of BASH! If this artist (or a similar style) were hired for art direction on ALL of the BASH! material (especially the new updated rule printing), I honestly think BASH! would "compete" on the level of BIG supers games with Mutants & Masterminds and such. I know (from play) that the style and rules of BASH! are wonderful (and better IMHO) than Mutants & Masterminds and any other supers RPG. But the design and art (honestly, with no real negativity) are not yet up to par to compete on style of M&M and others. If the art budget and style were focused on THIS level of awesome, BASH! in my marketing assessment would EXPLODE on the scene even greater. I (personally) would love love love to be BASHMAN's "art director" ... given a budget and GO on the new books. And I need a job! In this direction. BASH! would rule.
- strangely ... coincidentally... I have a character made and published from my HERO HOOKS book from 6-7 years ago named "Velocity Johnson". That said... I was at the same time bummed (that our name choices were so close) and excited, because the art is beautiful. LOL
- I may have missed the info... what is all this for? Will it be a published product of some sort? It should be. If the product lived up to half of the art style... it would rock.
- I have a project... a simple one. That I'd love to be able to have art like this done for. I did it before, but I haven't looked into finding a new artist (or requesting from my old artist) in awhile. Hence with all the questions.
