Compatible w/ BASH UE?

Post by Samuraidad »

How compatible is BASH Sci-Fi w/ BASH UE? Would it be useful to have BASH Sci-Fi for use with BASH UE? Is anyone currently using them together?

How compatable - pretty good- they are easily convertable. Essentially, if you want to have a supers character get tossed into the SF game, double their stats. If you bring an SF character into a UE game, halve their stats, round up.

For monsters/alien creatures, I might not even halve the stats- think about how powerful you want this monster to be relative to the Heroes who'll be fighting it. I have converted monsters from Heroic to Super Heroic scale w/ no adjustment at all - I just increased the scale (and thus we had 100' tall cyclops that could throw boulders the size of a bus as an enemy the party faced). As far as I'm concerned, you can use a lot of things straight across the board- just realize you are making them go from "tough" to "EPIC" in how powerful they are! But for supers, that should be par for the course!

A major difference is Energy. it is part of the BASH SF core mechanic and not part of the UE mechanic core. You'll have to decide what to do about it in your game. Another is money. BASH! SF keeps track of money for equipment, BASH! UE doesn't.

That said, if you have UE, the reasons you'd want SF (if not to play it by itself) are as follows:
Dozens of starships & other vehicle writeups (w/ rules to make your own)
Lots of Sci-Fi equipment with technology ranging from Medieval to the distant future.
Dogfighting, Capital Ship battles, & Fleet vs. Fleet can be dealt with in the rules.
Rules for making your own alien races and planets.
Dozens of sample alien monsters, robots, and human allies & adversaries.
A number of Sci-Fi subgenres are written up from Space Pulp to Matrix-like virtual worlds, to transforming giant robots to victorians hunting dinosaurs at the center of the earth. And of course, Space Opera is also an option!

Hmm... I've been toying with trying to run an Ion Guard game, maybe as a play-by-post here on the forums if there was interest and if I can get the time. It sounds like there could be some good stuff in Bash Sci-Fi for that. If I decide to go ahead with it, I'll have to pick up Sci-Fi first.

Intriguing! The different different genre's are a very appealing part of supers games to me. It would be nice to have a source of different aliens, mecha, robots and the such like. Hmmmmmm.....

Thanks, Bashman!

I'm finding BASH-UE to be very helpful with offering a greater selection of Enhancements and Limitations for modifying both Mundane and Alien/Mechanical/Psionic powers. I find the Sci-Fi system a little harder to find, and work with, the powers; but that's only because I've been working with Ultimate Edition for 8+ months now.

Still, I love the way that powers are handled in Sci-Fi. It is a way that I'm more used to seeing in 'other' game systems and I really felt like it suited the genre well. Powers wise - with BASH fantasy, I felt like I had just bought BASH Supers all over again but with 'Mundane' powers added (sure there was lots of cool rules tailoring the rules for swords+sorcery).

FYI - I really do like the BASH - Fantasy rules; I'm not griping (or,I should say that I really don't mean to).

Don't worry. BASH! Fantasy was only my second Rodeo. I'd learned a bit about organization, etc, before I made BASH! SF.

How much victorian sci-fi stuff is in there? I was re-reading the Omlevex setting for M&M 1E, and that setting had some masked supers running around during that era. Got me thinking of running a Victorian era supers game, using the suggestions for Pulp characters in BASH UE. Just wondered what kind of weapons/vehicles, etc from that era might be featured in Sci-Fi though.

Any updated on trying to get this through IPR yet?

Yes, BASH Sci-Fi really looks great! I loved seeing all the Star Ace artwork in the book. I really liked that game and the art really suits the cinematic style of BASH. Sci-Fi BASH is a great book. Having Ultimate Edition around is helpful for working up new alien/mechanical/psionic powers something truly unique is needed.

I'm looking forward to see your new Fantasy setting and rules book when it's released. :D
