help building Firestorm

Post by capmarvel »

Anyone have an idea how to build the original DC Firestorm (the Ronnie Raymon/Martin Stein version)?

Here is his write-up (borrowed from http://www.comicvine.com/firestorm/29-2353/).

Personally, I don't remember him having telescopic/microscopic vision and he didn't appear super-strong either, but in any case, I can't figure out how to do the transmutation power.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Ronnie Raymond
The ability to transmute inorganic matter. Any attempts to do so for organic matter can be cause feedback to Firestorm.

Superhuman speed in flight. He can move at speeds of up to 600 mph.

Can shoot powerful nuclear blasts.

Can absorb electromagnetic and kinetic energy into his body without hurting himself.

Possesses molecular vision, allowing him to see the make-up of atoms and molecules.

Can see the ultraviolet spectrum.

Possesses telescopic and microscopic vision or quark vision.

Possesses superhuman strength.

Can phase through solid objects and energy. At the same, it is harmful, and Ronnie is unable to use his powers in the state if drained or stressed.

I'm not overly familar with Firestorm and the description from Comicvine was a little sketchy on details but a Wikipedia entry was able to provide a little more clarification.

I’d suggest doing his transmutation power using the alternate version of BASH’s Transmutation. I’m not sure how large of an object he could affect but I’d probably suggest going all the way to rank 5, as a small jet doesn’t sound too big of an object for a comic book character.

Now since the descriptions implied that he could affect organic matter you could throw on a Situational limitation that causes him to take damage whenever he tries to do so.

Limitation: Firestorm takes 1DM x the level of Transmutation used when used on living organic matter (which cannot be soaked).

As for the other powers, many of them sound like they could be replicated with the Shape-Shifting power (but without actually changing his shape; unless he can, I don’t really know). Drops a stat in Agility to add Brawn Boost 2 (to replicate a limited super strength) or drops a stat rank to gain Armor 2 (transforming himself into some dense metal or something).

I hope those ideas help you.

Someone asked this question on RPG.net a while back and I posted an answer at length as to how I'd build the power.

Here it is:
For the transmuter type character, there is a variant of Conjuration that lets you transmute objects into other objects. Is that what you mean? Here it is, right after Conjuration:

Alternate Power: TRANSMUTATION
Instead of conjuring objects out of thin air, you can transform
materials around you into something else. The Mind check
you make must also be high enough that if it were Damage
it would be able to damage the object you are transforming
(see Collateral Damage rules page 23). The transformed
object will retain similar mass & size as the original, and will
revert to its original form at the end of the scene or when you
will it to return to its original state. Potential limitations for
this: cannot change the “state” of matter from solid to liquid
to gas, cannot transform any organic based matter (like rope
or wood). Potential enhancements: linked with shrinking or
growing (usable on others) you could control an objects size &
mass, range and area of effect would make this power work on
objects that are more distant.
As is, this power can have some powerful effects. For instance, if you were in an irradiated area, you could transform all of the radioactive material into inert material.

Now you'll probably also want to take some combat powers to represent standard uses of this power, such as Special Attack [Variable] to represent ability to turn the air into bolts of fiery sodium, turn a thrown baseball into a hand grenade, etc.

Immobilize can be used when you turn the air around someone into stone, etc.

Armor could represent you turning the air around you into a metal sheath of armor, etc. Deflect could mean you either create a physical shield that blocks things, or that you bat away whatever they shoot at you and turn it into something harmless, etc.

Now this power is going to have LOTS of versatility, so you may also want to take X Mastery [Broad] over the periodic table or something like that. This would give you access to use the power for various Power Tricks (cheaper than power Stunts), as well as various defensive uses for X Mastery from the book.

You might also want Flight (not sure how it works though).

If you put X Mastery in a Multipower with the same level of Transmutation, it would cost you 2 extra points (1 for multi-power, 1 for X-Mastery over the periodic table being a VERY broad type of mastery, as broad as taking the 4 classical elements).

Maybe I'll just stick with my typical Thing clone instead? :D

PS - Imagine trying to sell this story to a Hollywood executive....no chance a Firestorm movie gets made. They'd have to spend 2 hours just explaining his powers to the audience.

PS#2 - Thanks for the suggestions!

Hello, I hope you don't mind if I join in on this.

I just bought the (original) BASH! ruleset and decided to test it by building, you guessed it, Firestorm. So I thought I'd post my first take on the character here for ideas and comments. (Please keep in mind that, as an adaptation of a comics character, its not game balanced.)

Firestorm, The Nuclear Man

Stats (7 points)
Brawn 2 Agility 2 Mind 3

Powers (13 points)
Armor 1 (Usable on Others +1, Area Effect +1, only to absorb explosions -1) 2 pt.
Ghost form: 3 pt.
Master Molecules: (Does not affect organic matter -1) 4 pt. (Molecular Rearrangement)
Immunity: (Radiation, Heat) 2 pt.
Special Attack: 1 (Nuclear Blasts)
Flight: 1

Devastating Weakness: (To using Rearrangement on organic matter) (does x3 damage AND negates powers)(+1 to Stats and +2 to Powers)

Advantages
Instant Change

Disadvantages
Freak (hair is always 'on fire'-its an illusion)
Normal
Secret (identities)

Skills
Athletics (sports)
Science (physics)

Mental Malfunction- Multiple Minds- two, only one of which is in control of the body at a time (the other one can give advice.) Usually these are (respectively) Ronnie Raymond (high school student) and Professor Martin Stein (nuclear scientist.)

Background: New York City teenager Ronald Raymond thought he’d impress a girl he liked if he joined a group of radicals in sabotaging an experimental nuclear power plant before it opened. But the radicals wanted to blow it up, along with its inventor, Professor Stein. When Ronnie balked they left him to die in the explosion as well. Except instead of killing them (thanks to the fact Ronnie unknowingly had the latent power-granting metagene) the radiation gave them the ability to fuse into one being at will. From then on they used that power to act as the superhero Firestorm!

Notes:
*When using molecular rearrangement on organic matter, Firestorm gets a backlash, that can have varying bad effects from leaving him helpless to keeping him from splitting apart (temporarily).

OK, I updated my take on Firestorm: I used Armor to simulate his ability to absorb explosions, and gave him a Devastating Weakness. It's still not finished- he needs more Skills and Advantages- and it might be argued that he's more powerful than this. Still this is a good start, and I hope to update it to UE rules as soon as I have them.

Thanks!!!!

I'll probably post your current version then update with the UE version when you provide that.

Except instead of killing them (thanks to the fact Ronnie unknowingly had the latent power-granting metagene) the radiation gave them the ability to fuse into one being at will. From then on they used that power to act as the superhero Firestorm!

If I got anything wrong, please let me know!
