One of the most unusual superheroes published as a Mexican comic in the 70's was Fantomas. Not only was he an antihero of sorts - a thief who just happened to help people, ala Lupin the 3rd- but he was also an adaptation of an older character, created *as a villain* in a series of novels in the early 20th century! I would not find that out until years later.

In any case, the Mexican Fantomas owes more to the James Bond movies of the time; he had a whole organization of agents to help him, including 12 beautiful women named after the Zodiac signs. See what I mean?

Later on the series started getting REALLY weird. Science fiction and fantasy elements began creeping in. For example, Professor Semo, a quirky scientist (who looked like Karl Marx) and his bumbling robot assistant C-19 became regular characters. Semo would provide Fantomas with advanced technology when needed and discuss socialist philosophy with him (hmm...)

Anyway, my BASH take on the Mexican version is now available on my blog: https://elsijoblog.wordpress.com/2015/10/17/fantomas-the-elegant-menace/ Check it out!

Great character, Sijo. I loved the background story element about him hiding his face while at the orphanage. It would really be great to see some of Porfessor Semo's gadgets statted up. Does this hero never reveal his secret identity to anyone (with the exception being that one girl in the orphanage)?

As far as I know, Fantomas' true identity was never revealed, to anyone, and even in the scene where he reveals his face to the girl, it wasn't actually shown (we see the back of his head- all we learn is that he's handsome, not ugly or scarred.)

As for Semo, most of his inventions were one-shot deals, so I didn't bother statting them. The only one I remember being used more than once was an anti-gravity belt that helped Fantomas reach places he couldn't otherwise climb to.

But make no mistake, Semo could invent some incredible stuff- his own secret base was an invisible floating island!
