Are dice only exploded with rolls of boxcars or any doubles? I'm trying to come up with a critical failure rule and I'm thinking a snake eyes' roll would do it but wasn't sure if there was already a critical failure rule in either UE or SCI-FI.

It's any doubles according to the BASH: UE rule book. This is why the lowest number that can be rolled is 3.

Hey, ubrgeek!

Did you ever try out the idea of using snake eyes as a crit fail? I'm curious to know if it worked okay or if it ends up breaking the game somehow.

I didn't, actually. As cool as I found BASH I ended up switching to using the Fudge system. It seemed to match what I'm hoping to accomplish.

Rolling a natural "3" as a automatic failure seems good to me. If the automatic failure would have also been a regular failure by rolling a 3, it could be a Crit failure.

This is actually something that I've been toying with as a possible "Bad Luck" power when we get to the Luck Suite. Maybe an enhancement to Confusion and some other powers that makes any roll of 3 result in some bad backlash against the target.
