I bought this game years and years ago when I was trying to develop my own tabletop rpg (as in right before ultimate edition was released). Recently, my sister agreed to try out an actual tabletop rpg with me. I was going to run basic fantasy, but that game is designed under the assumption that you have a whole team of characters, its not meant to be played with a solo character. Then it dawned on me, I have ALOT more easy rpgs in my folder here other than basic fantasy, and my sister is far far more interested in superhero settings any (she's a huge fan of the hulk).

Anyway, I've been re-reading the book to learn how to play the game again, and I need a few rules clarifications. I say 'a few', because I will likely have more as I read through the book and I'd prefer to not spam the forums.

And just a note, I do know this system didn't completely appeal to me back then, but I've realized that there is no 'perfect' system for me, and honestly I was in no position to judge it any since I had never played a tabletop rpg before. So I recently changed focus, I'm just gonna pick a system (a simple once, since neither me or my sister has done this before) and go with it, see how it turns out. I do think I offended the creator because of my opinions in the past, and I do apologize for that.

Now, moving on to the actual topic of this thread...

My first question is how some 'extended checks' work. Some of them clearly say they're opposed checks, but they also have a set target number! My assumption is that its supposed to be a race, with whoever getting to the goal first winning that contest.

My second one is in regard to vehicles, what happens if the vehicle is totaled? Does that mean you lose the vehicle until you can buy a new one? What if you have the 'super vehicle' advantage, do you basically lose it when you lose your vehicle? Or do they just get a new one for free? I doubt this will come up in gameplay, but I do know that actual gameplay can be rather unpredictable, and I have no idea what kind of character she's going to make (I've only given her a free demo of the first edition I got before I bought any of the books, I just printed out the ultimate edition and she has yet to even see that).

I also kind of have a third question, though I think I figured it out anyway. It has to do with 'called shots'. I surmise that what its referring to is you do a normal contested contest (or w/e its called in this game) and the defender gets a +10 result bonus essentially?

edit: Like I said, I discovered something else I need to ask. In the book, it clearly indicates if you're hit while flying, you begin to fall, but is it possible to start flying again before you hit the ground (assuming you have enough time to do so)? The book says nothing about this. Either I would just use an agilty or atheltics roll to determine success, or I would just say the character starts flying again after falling for another panel.

1. Which specific extended checks are you having an issue with? There are quite a few of them and there are also a few different dynamics for how they work. One of which is a race, but not all work that way.

2. Up to the Narrator, but they probably should either get a new super vehicle later on, with the words "Mark II" added to the name. It might be more than an issue later, though. If they never get a replacement vehicle, the Narrator should let them replace the Super Vehicle Advantage with something else.

3. Yes. In exchange for less chance to hit, the attacker gets some extra effect added to the attack; like tripping, potential disarm, or extra damage.

4. Under the falling rules, it explains how far you fall each page. The first page, you fall 3 stories, then 6, then 10 per page after that. So if you are 10 stories up, you won't hit the ground until Page 3. If you get to take a Panel before then, you can start flying again. No roll really required. But if you are Dazed, you may hit the ground.

The two I'm referring to are called 'Track the Quarry' and 'Find the Sniper'.

To me, 'Track the Quarry' is a lot like a race. The second one is a bit more confusing, especially since a character could beat the '40' in a single roll!

I have another question, not related to how the game is played though.

I see that some errata has been released for this game, and on the front page there's an old news article that claims I can get my UE pdf updated somehow so it'll have all the updates in the second printing. But I can't figure out how to do that. Is it even possible? I would love to have the errata actually be listed in my old outdated pdf.

edit: Nevermind, I figured it out. Got the new updated pdf in my folder now.

Track the Quarry is similar to a race, but it is between the Quarry's Stealth skill against the Tracker's Outdoor/Tracking skill. Each hour that passes, each of the two makes a roll.

If the Tracker reaches 100 before the Quarry, he finds him.

If the Quarry reaches 100 before the Tracker, he escapes.

If the time frame elapses without either party reaching 100, you probably could declare whoever has the highest total the winner, but I'd make the victory a little less than perfect. The Quarry escapes, but leaves a clue behind, etc.

For Find the Sniper works like this:

Both the Sniper and the Lookouts are trying to get a 40. Yes, it is possible to get it in a single roll. If the Lookouts (use whoever rolls highest) get a 40 before the sniper, they've spotted him.

If the Sniper gets a 40 Stealth before the Lookouts get a 40 Vision check, the Sniper has successfully moved to another location without being noticed and fires again. Once this attack is resolved, the process repeats itself. There is no "Time Frame" really for this contest, as it will keep going as long as the sniper wants to keep shooting or until he gets caught. If both get a 40, treat it as a Tie (and Ties go to the Hero).

What usually happens is if the Sniper is spotted, the Narrator immediately begins a Chase Scene, with the sniper having a considerable head start based on the distance he was shooting from. Of course, Heroes could also shoot back if they have sufficient range.

Glad you got your PDF updated. If you got it through RPGnow or Drivethru, they automatically update files for previous purchasers, so you only need to redownload something that has been updated, In fact, they will even tag the file as having been updated so when you check your library you can see what's changed, not just for Basic Action Games products, but for all of them.
